The production reactors at the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site used large graphite piles as the moderator. As part of long-term decommissioning plans, the potential need for ¹⁴C radiobioassay of workers was identified. Technical issues associated with ¹⁴C bioassay and worker monitoring were investigated, including anticipated graphite characterization, potential intake scenarios, and the bioassay capabilities that may be required to support the decommissioning of the graphite piles. A combination of urine and feces sampling would likely be required for the absorption type S ¹⁴C anticipated to be encountered. However, the concentrations in the graphite piles appear to be sufficiently low that dosimetrically significant intakes of ¹⁴C are not credible, thus rendering moot the need for such bioassay.

Carbon fiber (CF) obtained by pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile (PAN-CF) surpasses metals in properties suitable for diverse applications such as aircraft manufacture and power turbine blades. PAN-CF obtained by pyrolysis at 1200-1400 °C shows a remarkably high tensile strength of 7 GPa, much higher than pitch-based CF (pb-CF) consisting of piles of pure graphene networks. However, little information has been available on the atomistic structure of PAN-CF and on how it forms during pyrolysis.

To realize this aim, however, the hybrids which are often rapidly removed from circulation and the piled up tumors periphery near the blood vessels must address the difficulties in low blood half-lives and tumor penetration. In this study, a sponge-inspired carbon composites-supported red blood cell (RBC) membrane that doubles as a stealth agent and photolytic carrier that transports tumor-penetrative agents (graphene quantum dots and docetaxel (GQD-D)) and heat with irradiation was developed.

Geothermal energy piles are a quite recent renewable energy technique where geothermal energy in the foundation of a building is used to transport and store geothermal energy. In this paper, a structural-functional integrated cement-based composite, which can be used for energy piles, was developed using expanded graphite and graphite nanoplatelet-based composite phase change materials (CPCMs). Its mechanical properties, thermal-regulatory performance, and heat of hydration were evaluated.

Energy piles-A fairly new renewable energy concept-Use a ground heat exchanger (GHE) in the foundation piles to supply heating and cooling loads to the supported building. Applying phase change materials (PCMs) to piles can help in maintaining a stable temperature within the piles and can then influence the axial load acting on the piles. In this study, two kinds of carbon-based composite PCMs (expanded graphite-based PCM and graphite nanoplatelet-based PCM) were prepared by vacuum impregnation for potential application in energy piles.

Our recent studies on metal-organic nanohybrids based on alkylated graphene oxide (GO), reduced alkylated graphene oxide (RGO) and InP/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) are presented. The GO alkylated by octadecylamine (ODA) and the QD bearing a dodecane thiol (DDT) ligand are soluble in toluene. The nanocomposite alkylated-GO-QD (GOQD) is readily formed from the solution mixture.
