A puzzling malignant adrenal tumor.

Ann Endocrinol (Paris)

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology, Santo António Local Health Unit, Largo Professor Abel Salazar, 4099-001 Porto, Portugal.

A previously healthy 49-year-old male presented with abdominal pain, constitutional syndrome, paroxysmal palpitations and diaphoresis. Full-body CT scan showed a large malignant adrenal mass with abdominal lymph node and pulmonary metastasis. Biochemical studies revealed hypersecretion of catecholamines, cortisol, sexual steroids and steroid precursors; ACTH was not suppressed, and chromogranin A was negative.

Key Points: Metabolism adaptations due to glucose-6 phosphate accumulation in glycogen storage disease type Ia kidneys, toward a Warburg-like metabolism, promoted cell proliferation. Metabolic perturbations directly affected primary cilium structure and cystogenesis in glycogen storage disease type Ia kidneys.

Background: Glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSDIa) is a rare metabolic disorder caused by mutations in the catalytic subunit of glucose-6 phosphatase (G6PC1).

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) are two incretins that bind to their respective receptors and activate the downstream signaling in various tissues and organs. Both GIP and GLP-1 play roles in regulating food intake by stimulating neurons in the brain's satiety center. They also stimulate insulin secretion in pancreatic β-cells, but their effects on glucagon production in pancreatic α-cells differ, with GIP having a glucagonotropic effect during hypoglycemia and GLP-1 exhibiting glucagonostatic effect during hyperglycemia.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome Presented with Diabetes Mellitus and Primary Amenorrhea: A Case Report.

Mymensingh Med J

Article Synopsis
  • MRKH syndrome is a rare condition that leads to the absence or underdevelopment of the uterus and vagina in females, affecting their reproductive health.
  • A 17-year-old girl with MRKH was admitted for primary amenorrhea and poorly controlled diabetes, despite having normal growth and no significant medical or family history.
  • Clinical evaluations revealed normal external genitalia, a blind vaginal pouch, absence of the uterus and cervix, and an ectopic left kidney, while her blood glucose levels remained poorly managed.

Standardization parameters and synergism of source plant materials for the antidiabetic efficacy of the Rauvolfia-Citrus tea.

Fitoterapia

July 2024

The Bartholin Institute, Rigshospitalet Department, 3733, Copenhagen Biocenter, Ole Maaløes Vej 5, 2200 Copenhagen N, Denmark. Electronic address:

The introduction of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1)-based therapies has greatly improved the management of type 2 diabetes (T2D), as they ensure good blood glucose control and promote weight loss. Ingestion of standardized herbal remedies that promote the same endogenous metabolic processes affected by the GLP-1-based treatments could provide cheaper alternatives in low- and middle-income countries, where there is currently an increase in the incidence of T2D. The focus in this study was to determine quality control parameters and the prime factors for the Rauvolfia-Citrus tea (RC-tea), as used in Nigerian traditional medicine to treat T2D.
