AI Article Synopsis

  • The study assessed the use of the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POPQ) system in literature to determine if it should be simplified.
  • Over a five-year span, 283 articles from three major journals were reviewed, noting how many utilized specific POPQ points versus just the overall prolapse stage.
  • Findings showed that nearly half of the articles only reported prolapse stages without detailing individual points, indicating a potential need for revisions or simplification of the POPQ system for better usability.

Article Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine whether the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POPQ) system should be simplified based on its use in the peer-reviewed literature.

Methods: The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and International Urogynecology Journal were used for this study. All articles relating to pelvic organ prolapse published in these journals from January 2005 to December 2010 were reviewed for their use of the POPQ system. The POPQ points described in the Materials and/or Results sections of these articles were recorded.

Results: Two hundred eighty-three articles using the POPQ system were identified. One hundred thirty-two (47%) articles used the POPQ system but only to determine the stage of prolapse. Specific points were not mentioned. One hundred two (36%) articles evaluated specific POPQ points (Aa, Ba, Ap, Bp, C, D). Forty-nine (17%) articles evaluated points Gh, Pb, and Tvl.

Conclusions: The POPQ system, based on its use in the peer-reviewed literature, may need revisions. An abbreviated version of the system may be considered, allowing for more widespread use.

Introduction And Hypothesis: The aim of the study was to compare clinical outcomes when using robotic-assisted sacral hysterocolpopexy (RASC) and vaginal surgery using the Uphold™ Vaginal Support System mesh for pelvic organ prolapse repair.

Methods: This was a nonrandomized, prospective, multicenter study in which 72 women underwent RASC, and 73 Uphold™ surgery, for apical prolapse (POP-Q C ≥ stage II). Anatomical outcomes were assessed using the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system.

Introduction And Hypothesis: The high recurrence rate (up to 40%) of native tissue surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is concerning and a better understanding of the effect of surgery is essential in optimizing treatment. As physical examination (Pelvic Organ Prolapse-Quantification, POP-Q) underestimates the degree of prolapse, upright assessment may provide new insights. Therefore, we compared supine POP-Q with upright magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination of the anatomical effect of native tissue POP surgery on the pelvic anatomy.

The prevalence of POP in women ranges from 30-40%, with 10-20% requiring surgical intervention. Annually, over 225,000 surgical procedures for POP are performed in the United States. The severity of prolapse is assessed using the four-stage POP-Q system, which facilitates clinical research by providing a standardized measure of defect severity.

Department of Urology and Guangdong Key Laboratory of Urology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou Medical University, Kangda Road 1#, Haizhu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong, 510230, China.

Background: Le Fort colpocleisis is an obliterative surgery for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). In this study, we aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of Le Fort colpocleisis in the treatment of patients with stage III-IV POP.

Methods: The study was designed as a retrospective analysis of a single-center case series.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Accurate and complete reporting of the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system is essential for reporting research outcomes in POP. We aimed to assess the accuracy and completeness of POP-Q reporting in studies published from selected journals in 2023 and evaluate the validity of available POP-Q calculators.

Methods: A systematic search of Medline and Embase was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to identify eligible studies from selected journals in 2023 that utilised the POP-Q system.
