Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic debilitating disease characterized by gradually increasing fibrosis of the oral cavity and pharynx, mainly the buccal mucosa, resulting in trismus. Prepotency of the disease is seen in the Indian subcontinent, with its highest incidence in South India due to various deleterious habits. In spite of the numerous medical modalities employed in the management of oral submucous fibrosis, occasionally surgical intervention becomes inevitable. Various flaps have been used to reconstruct the surgical defects following excision of fibrous bands. Undoubtedly; the buccal fat pad remains the most versatile because of its excellent blood supply and minimal donor site morbidity. Here we present a case of severe oral submucous fibrosis surgically treated and reconstructed using buccal fat pad.

Objectives: Drug-loaded mucoadhesive silk fibroin (SF) microneedle patch can overcome the limitations of low bioavailability and significant pain associated with traditional treatment methods, such as topical application or injection of triamcinolone for oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). However, these systems release the drug too quickly, failing to meet the clinical requirements. This study aims to construct a mucoadhesive SF microneedle patch pre-assembled with silk fibroin nanospheres (SFN) and explore its ability to sustain the release of triamcinolone in the treatment of OSF.

Objective: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is categorized as an oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) with an increased risk of occurrence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In this study, we aimed to identify the hub genes associated with OSMF and OSCC.

Study Design: Using RStudio, a set of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in (A) OSMF, (B) OSCC, and (C) comparative OSMF-OSCC category, obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO).

Oral submucosal fibrosis is a highly malignant oral condition that necessitates the use of sophisticated therapeutic procedures. OSF is a multifactorial precancerous condition induced by areca nut chewing, deficiencies in vitamins and trace minerals, immunological aspects, and hereditary factors. Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells possess the capability for multidirectional activation and are extensively distributed throughout the body.

Unlabelled: Oral Submucous Fibrosis constitutes a severe condition affecting the lining of the mouth, which carries a risk of developing into oral squamous cell carcinoma, and seriously threaten individuals' lives. Currently, no specific treatment has been utilized to prevent OSF. The detailed mechanism of OSF is still elusive, and this study aims to clarify the mechanism of OSF.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a serious condition associated with areca nut chewing, linked to dental health and possibly hearing impairment, prompting a need for investigation into its effects on hearing.
  • A systematic review of 1137 articles identified 18 studies showing a significant correlation between OSMF severity and hearing loss, particularly conductive hearing loss in advanced cases.
  • The review highlighted that Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) often contributes to hearing issues in OSMF patients, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary management and early audiological screening for better patient outcomes.
