We present a new method to obtain close-packed monolayers composed of noble metal nanoparticles (NP) possessing well-defined permanent charge of either sign. The method is based on the fact that ligands forming the protecting layer exhibit ability to rearrange at the NPs surface. We demonstrate that if the protecting layer is composed of a mixture of hydrophobic and hydrophilic charged ligands in appropriate proportion, the NP exhibits properties of a Janus-type particle with one of the hemispheres hydrophilic and the other hydrophobic. Such amphiphilic NPs self-assemble into a monolayer of well defined surface charge at the air-water interface. Due to strong stabilizing effect of the lateral electrostatic repulsions, such monolayer can be compressed to form close-packed hexagonal structure, and then easily transferred onto a solid substrate with the Langmuir-Blodgett technique.

Control over the orientation of polycyclic aromatic dyes in thin films is paramount to tailoring their optical, electronic, and mechanical properties. Their supramolecular assembly in films is tuned here by converting the macrocyclic dyes to large amphiphiles. Two octaalkythio-substituted tetraazaporphyrins (TAPs) with one 5-carboxypentyl and one pentyl or dodecyl chain per pyrrole ring were synthesized as statistical mixtures of four regioisomers.

The construction of ultrathin membranes from linearly aligned π-electron systems is advantageous for targeted energy, charge, or mass transfer. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique enables the creation of such membranes, especially with amphiphilic π-electron systems. However, these systems often aggregate, forming rigid Langmuir monolayers with defects or holes.

Labels with structural color based on photonic crystals (PCs) have drawn significant attention due to their unique color emission, offering promising solutions for anti-counterfeiting applications. However, to meet the demands of future high-security applications, conventional structural color labels require further improvement. This study introduces a novel approach to fabricate highly encrypted anti-counterfeiting labels by combining close-packed and non-close-packed monolayers of nanoparticles (NPs) onto adhesive surfaces.

The functionality of multicomponent self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can be severely diminished by the segregation of like components into nanoscale domains, a process that maximizes favorable short-range intermolecular interactions. Here, we explore the use of a modular family of sulfur-functionalized metal bis(terpyridine) complexes ([M(tpy-R)](PF)) to prepare mixed SAMs, considering that the comparable structure, dimensions, and ionic composition of these species should render them interchangeable within the adsorbed surface layer. While surface voltammetry experiments show that these SAMs do exhibit compositions representative of their assembly solutions, they also suggest, in line with previous reports, that adjacent complexes in the monolayer are separated by a gap of ∼ 1 nm.
