In present study, the performance and separation characteristics of nine macroporous resins for the enrichment and purification of gardenia yellow from Gardenia jasminoides var. radicans Makino have been evaluated. The adsorption and desorption properties of crude gardenia yellow solution on macroporous resins including HPD722, HPD100, HPD100A, HPD400, HPD400A, D101, AB-8, XAD-16, and NKA-9 have been compared. Then, HPD722 was chosen to purify gardenia yellow because of its strong adsorption and desorption abilities as well as high selectivity. Column packed with HPD722 resin was used to perform dynamic adsorption and desorption tests to optimize the separation process of gardenia yellow. The optimal conditions were as follows: The crude gardenia yellow solution with concentration of 15 mg/mL was loaded in column packed with HPD722 resin at the flow rate of 1.0 mL/min, and the adsorbate-laden column was washed with 800 mL water, 600 mL 15% ethanol water solution respectively at the speed of 2.5 mL/min, then desorbed with 200 mL 80% ethanol water solution at the speed of 3.5 mL/min. The colority of the product obtained were up to 300. The method developed in this study provides a new approach for scale-up separation and purification of gardenia yellow from G. jasminoides var. radicans Makino.

Objective: This experiment aimed to obtain the relatively rare cis-crocetin isomer from natural plants, which predominantly exist in the more stable all-trans configuration. This was achieved through iodine-induced isomerization, followed by purification and structural identification. The study also aimed to compare the pharmacokinetic differences between cis- and trans-crocetin .

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The desiccative ripe fruits of Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis) (called Zhizi in China) are known with cold character and the effects of reducing fire except vexed, clearing away heat evil, and cooling blood and eliminating stasis. Zhizi is often clinical formulated to treat various types of fever. Fever is a sign of inflammation and, geniposide from Zhizi has been proved with anti-inflammatory in various inflammatory models.

As the low water solubility of gallic acid (GA), its biological activities such as water-based antioxidant effect may be greatly reduced. Therefore, GA-loaded nanocomposites (F-SiO@GA) with high water solubility were synthesized via solvent evaporation using food-grade silica (F-SiO) as carriers in this work. The assessment of antioxidant capacity revealed that F-SiO@GA exhibited considerably greater free-radical scavenging ability than free GA and the physical mixture of F-SiO and GA.

Food coloring plays a vital role in influencing consumers' food choices, imparting vibrant and appealing colors to various food and beverage products. Synthetic food colorants have been the most commonly used coloring agents in the food industry. However, concerns about potential health issues related to synthetic colorants, coupled with increasing consumer demands for food safety and health, have led food manufacturers to explore natural alternatives.

Natural polychromatic biomaterials (like carminic acid and gardenia yellow) possess coloring merits and functionality, but are instable under light and heat. Self-assembly of gelatin and polychromatic materials could be induced by carnosic acid inclusions, illustrating great potential in food application. Antioxidant properties, pigment retention rates, UV irradiation stability, rheological properties, and physical resistances (oil, ethanol, heat and microwave) of samples were improved by carnosic acid inclusions, owing to the newly formed hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions (UV spectrum, particle size, zeta potential, FTIR, XPS and SEM).
