Objectives: This study will test the efficacy of motivational interviewing (MI) conducted by primary care providers and dieticians among children ages 2-8 years old with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 85th and ≤ 97th percentile.

Methods: Forty-two practices from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Pediatric Research in Office Settings Network were assigned to one of three groups. Group 1 (usual care) measures BMI percentile at baseline, and at 1- and 2-year follow-ups and receives standard health education materials. Group 2 providers deliver three proactive MI counselling sessions with a parent of the index child in Year 1 and one additional 'booster' visit in Year 2. Group 3 adds six MI counselling sessions from a trained dietician. The primary outcome is the child's BMI percentile at 2-year follow-up. Secondary outcomes include parent report of the child's screen time, physical activity, intake of fruits and vegetables, and sugar-sweetened beverages.

Results: We enrolled 633 eligible children whose mean BMI percentile was 92.0 and mean age of 5.1. The cohort was 57% female. Almost 70% of parents reported a household income of ≥ $40,000 per year, and 39% had at least a college education. The cohort was 63% white, 23% Hispanic, 7% black and 7% Asian. Parent self-reported confidence that their child will achieve a healthy weight was on average an 8 (out of 10).

Conclusion: To date, several aspects of the study can inform similar efforts including our ability to use volunteer clinicians to recruit participants and their willingness to dedicate their time, without pay, to receive training in MI.

Background: Previous studies indicated that early life exposure to particulate matter of 2.5 μm or less (PM) could impair children's growth. However, the adverse effects of maternal ozone (O) and its interplay with PM on offspring's growth are unclear.

Purpose: To compare health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL) between children with hyperkyphosis and idiopathic scoliosis using 9-item Oswestry Disability Index (ODI-9) and Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pain Interference, Mobility, and Anxiety.

Methods: Children with hyperkyphosis, idiopathic scoliosis, and controls with no structural diagnosis ages 10-18 years who completed the PROMIS Pediatric Pain Interference, Mobility, and Anxiety domains were retrospectively evaluated from April 2021 to June 2023. Comparisons were made between hyperkyphosis, idiopathic scoliosis, and control groups.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the obesity epidemic, with both adults and children demonstrating rapid weight gain during the pandemic. However, the impact of having a COVID-19 diagnosis on this trend is not known.

Methods: Using longitudinal data from January 2019 to June 2023 collected by the US National Institute for Health's National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), children (age 2-18 years) with positive COVID-19 test results (n=11,474, 53% male, mean [SD] age 5.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to propose a lateral oscillating device for the prevention of pressure ulcers by understanding the mechanisms of tissue protection in healthy individuals during prolonged decubitus. We also sought to determine the optimal time interval for oscillation, considering peak pressure peaks and tolerable pressure limits as a function of individual characteristics such as age, weight, height, gender, and BMI.

Methods: A quasi-experimental, descriptive and analytical observational study was conducted between January 2022 and June 2023 with a sample of 25 healthy volunteers.

Background: Friedreich ataxia is a rare neurodegenerative disorder caused by frataxin deficiency. Both underweight and overweight occur in mitochondrial disorders, each with adverse health outcomes. We investigated the longitudinal evolution of anthropometric abnormalities in Friedreich ataxia and the hypothesis that both weight loss and weight gain are associated with faster disease progression.
