Atractyloside (ATR) was characterized in 1868 and until now structural studies on diterpenic moiety had been done through the characterization of ATR derivatives; while the glycosidic moiety seemed to be a β-D-glucopyranose a recent crystal structure of the mitochondrial ATP/ADP carrier in complex with CATR showed an α-D-glucopyranose. We decided to re-examine the ATR and CATR structures by crystallographic study of ATR.

Structural features of dioxane lignin: A comparative study with milled wood and formaldehyde-stabilized lignins.

Int J Biol Macromol

Dioxane lignin (DL) is isolated from plant material under mild acidolysis conditions and is widely used in many studies as a representative sample of protolignin, an alternative to milled wood lignin (MWL). However, the structural changes caused by hydrolytic degradation reactions during DL extraction are still poorly understood. In this work, an integrated approach based on 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to establish the features of the lignin structure on the example of pine lignin isolated using dioxane under various conditions: MWL, DL and "formaldehyde stabilized" lignin (LSF).

In this study, we report the first example of acyclic (amino)(N-pyridinium)carbenoid gold(III) complexes synthesized via a coupling reaction between 2-pyridylselenyl chloride and Au(I)-bound isonitriles. The reaction involves an initial oxidative addition of the Se-Cl moiety to Au(I), followed by the nucleophilic addition of the pyridine fragment to the isonitrile's C≡N bond, furnishing a metallacycle. Importantly, this is the first example of the pyridine acting as a nucleophile towards metal-bound isonitriles.

We examine the collective motion in computational models of a two-dimensional dusty plasma crystal and a charged colloidal suspension as they approach their respective melting transitions. To unambiguously identify rearrangement events in the crystal, we map the trajectory of configurations from an equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation to the corresponding sequence of configurations of local potential energy minima ("inherent structures"). This inherent structure (IS) trajectory eliminates the ambiguity that arises from localized vibrational motion.

Biosensors based on DNA aptamer receptors are increasingly used in diagnostic applications. To improve the sensitivity and specificity of aptasensors, parameters affecting the stability and binding efficiency of the receptor layer need to be identified and studied. For example, the blocking step, i.

Monitoring defects in plates using topological acoustic sensing and sideband peak counting.

Ultrasonics

January 2025

New Frontiers of Sound Science and Technology Center, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721, USA; Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721, USA.

We demonstrate an integrated non-destructive inspection methodology that employs the nonlinear ultrasonics-based sideband peak counting (SPC) technique in conjunction with topological acoustics (TA) sensing to comprehensively characterize the acoustic response of steel plates that contain differing levels of damage. By combining the SPC technique and TA, increased sensitivity to defect/damage detection as well as the ability to spatially resolve the presence of defects was successfully established. Towards this end, using a Rockwell hardness indenter, steel plates were subject to one, three and five centrally located indentations respectively.
