The OOKP (osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis) is the treatment of choice for conditions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, trachoma, multiple failed grafts and chemical burns which are not amenable to penetrating keratoplasty. The OOKP is an autograft which replaces the cornea with a polymethacrylate cylinder mounted on a tooth-bone complex. The aim of this paper was to retrospectively analyze the records in 26 patients undergoing OOKP surgery between 2007 and 2011. The paper describes our experience with the procedure, with emphasis on its oral and maxillofacial aspects and management of associated complications. The aetiology of blindness in 23 patients was Stevens-Johnson's syndrome and chemical burns in three. Twenty-two patients had their maxillary canines, two had mandibular canines and two had maxillary first premolars as the choice of donor tooth. An oroantral fistula developed in four patients. One patient needed to undergo a surgical procedure for closure of the same. Roots of adjacent teeth were exposed in 12 patients. Twenty-four patients underwent both stages of the procedure with 19 being visually rehabilitated successfully. There was no improvement in the vision of four patients. One patient was lost to follow-up. Two patients have yet to undergo Stage 2.

Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) is a human-exclusive bacterial pathogen killing annually more than 500,000 patients, and no current licensed vaccine exists. Strep A bacteria are highly diverse, but all produce an essential, abundant, and conserved surface carbohydrate, the Group A Carbohydrate, which contains a rhamnose polysaccharide (RhaPS) backbone. RhaPS is a validated universal vaccine candidate in a glycoconjugate prepared by chemical conjugation of the native carbohydrate to a carrier protein.

Purpose: This study highlights the feasibility of femtosecond laser-assisted large-diameter lamellar corneal-limbal keratoplasty and its efficacy in the treatment of ocular surface failure caused by bilateral ocular chemical injury.
Observations: The series included 3 patients with ocular surface failure caused by bilateral ocular chemical burns. After dissection of the host cornea, a femtosecond laser-assisted large-diameter lamellar corneoscleral button, with varying thickness of 250-400 μm, was sutured to the recipient bed.

An umbilical granuloma (UG) is one of the most common umbilical anomalies seen in infants, mostly due to delayed cord separation. It is usually treated with silver nitrate; however, topical application of silver nitrate can cause chemical burns, creating concern among parents. We present a similar case in a two-month-old baby boy with a giant UG, which was treated with topical silver nitrate application, producing significant chemical burns around the umbilicus and on the anterior abdominal wall.

A woman in her 50s underwent simple limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET) in the left eye for chemical injury with total limbal stem cell deficiency. A seroma, a hitherto unreported complication of the procedure was noted on the 10th postoperative day. It was associated with an accumulation of inflammatory cells and exudates in the inferior part of the amniotic membrane resembling a hypopyon.

Airbags have significantly reduced the severity of injuries sustained in vehicular crashes. The most common injuries are minor abrasions, contusions, etc., but severe and fatal thermal burns and craniofacial fractures may occur nonetheless.
