We report a highly efficient cryo-cooled eye-safe laser operation of a resonantly-pumped (in-band) Er³⁺:GdVO₄ single crystal. The maximum continuous wave (CW) power of 10.3 W with 84% slope efficiency was achieved at 1598.7 with pumping at 1538.6 nm by a spectrally-narrowed Er-fiber laser. Under the 1529 nm resonant pumping by a commercially available diode bar stack operating in a quasi-CW (QCW) mode, the laser delivered 37 W of output power with 68% slope efficiency. This is believed to be the first reported cryo-cooled Er³⁺:GdVO₄ laser, resonantly-pumped into the ⁴I₁₅/₂ →⁴I₁₃/₂ transition.

Advances in structural biology have relied heavily on synchrotron cryo-crystallography and cryogenic electron microscopy to elucidate biological processes and for drug discovery. However, disparities between cryogenic and room-temperature (RT) crystal structures pose challenges. Here, Cryo2RT, a high-throughput RT data-collection method from cryo-cooled crystals that leverages the cryo-crystallography workflow, is introduced.

We present a detailed study of the time-dependent photophysics and photochemistry of a known conformation of the two protonated pentapeptides Leu-enkephalin (Tyrosine-Glycine-Glycine-Phenylalanine-Leucine, YGGFL) and its chromophore-swapped analogue FGGYL, carried out under cryo-cooled conditions in the gas phase. Using ultraviolet-infrared (UV-IR) double resonance, we record excited state IR spectra as a function of time delay between UV and IR pulses. We identify unique Tyr OH stretch transitions due to the S state and the vibrationally excited triplet state(s) formed by intersystem crossing, T(v).

Maximizing the performance of crystal monochromators is a key aspect in the design of beamline optics for diffraction-limited synchrotron sources. Temperature and deformation of cryo-cooled crystals, illuminated by high-power beams of X-rays, can be estimated with a purely analytical model. The analysis is based on the thermal properties of cryo-cooled silicon crystals and the cooling geometry.

A method to optimize the thermal deformation of an indirectly cryo-cooled silicon crystal monochromator exposed to intense X-rays at a low-emittance diffraction-limited synchrotron radiation source is presented. The thermal-induced slope error of the monochromator crystal has been studied as a function of heat transfer efficiency, crystal temperature distribution and beam footprint size. A partial cooling method is proposed, which flattens the crystal surface profile within the beam footprint by modifying the cooling contact area to optimize the crystal peak temperature.
