Children acquire general knowledge about many kinds of things, but there are few known means by which this knowledge is acquired. In this article, it is proposed that children acquire generic knowledge by sharing in pretend play. In Experiment 1, twenty-two 3- to 4-year-olds watched pretense in which a puppet represented a "nerp" (an unfamiliar kind of animal). For instance, in one scenario, the nerp ate and disliked a carrot. When subsequently asked generic questions about real nerps, children's responses suggested that they had learned general facts (e.g., nerps dislike carrots). In Experiment 2, thirty-two 4- to 5-year-olds learned from scenarios lacking pretend speech or sound effects. The findings reveal a long overlooked means by which children can acquire generic knowledge.

Background: Sexual and reproductive health issues in adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) have been left behind in HIV care programs. ALHIV are at risk of unintended pregnancy which jeopardizes their socio-economic future, health outcomes and exposes their newborn to HIV transmission. A better understanding of these events is needed.

Background: The causes of breast cancer are poorly understood. A potential risk factor is Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a lifelong infection nearly everyone acquires. EBV-transformed human mammary cells accelerate breast cancer when transplanted into immunosuppressed mice, but the virus can disappear as malignant cells reproduce.

Several interventional strategies have been implemented in malaria endemic areas where the burden is high, that include among others, intermittent preventive treatment (IPT), a tactic that blocks transmission and can reduce disease morbidity. However, the implementation IPT strategies raises a genuine concern, intervening the development of naturally acquired immunity to malaria which requires continuous contact with parasite antigens. This study investigated whether dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) or artesunate-amodiaquine (ASAQ) IPT in schoolchildren (IPTsc) impairs IgG reactivity to six malaria antigens.

Survivors of pediatric brain tumours are at a high risk of cognitive morbidity. Reliable individual-level predictions regarding the likelihood, degree, and affected domains of cognitive impairment would be clinically beneficial. While established risk factors exist, quantitative MRI analysis may enhance predictive value, above and beyond current clinical risk models.

The Berlin Heart EXCOR is a pulsatile paracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD) for neonates, infants, children and adults with congenital or acquired severe ventricular dysfunction. Berlin Heart EXCOR VADs are routinely used as either a bridge to a cardiac transplantation, or occasionally as a bridge to ventricular recovery. Our programmatic philosophy is to bridge neonates and infants with functionally univentricular ductal-dependent systemic circulation or functionally univentricular ductal-dependent pulmonary circulation who are at high risk for staged palliation because of important cardiac risk factors with a single-ventricle VAD (sVAD) as a bridge to a cardiac transplant.
