The paper reports on a simple method of synthesizing [PEO(PCL)(2)] triarm star-shaped copolymers by a combination of Michael-addition type reaction and ring-opening polymerization. A Michael-addition reaction yielded a PEO end-capped by two hydroxyl groups-a [PEO(OH)(2)] macroinitiator-which was used for sequential building of PCL blocks. The macroinitiator and copolymers were analyzed by FTIR, (1)H NMR spectroscopy and SEC. The self-assembly behavior of the copolymers in aqueous media was studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The size and morphology of the obtained micelles were determined by TEM. None of the polymers had cytotoxic effects in vitro. Cellular uptake studies showed the accumulation of neutral red loaded micelles in the perinuclear area of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells revealing a cellular uptake associated with macropinocytosis and caveolae mediated endocytosis. The accumulation had a sustained effect over 3 days pointing at the potential application of the copolymers micelles as a drug delivery system.

The influence of the macromolecular reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (macro-RAFT) agent architecture on the morphology of the self-assemblies obtained by aqueous RAFT dispersion polymerization in polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is studied by comparing amphiphilic AB diblock, (AB) triblock, and triarm star-shaped (AB) copolymers, constituted of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAc = A) and diacetone acrylamide (DAAm = B). Symmetrical triarm (AB) copolymers could be synthesized for the first time in a PISA process. Spheres and higher order morphologies, such as worms or vesicles, could be obtained for all types of architectures and the parameters that determine their formation have been studied.

Optical properties of three types of terthiophene (3T) functionalized conjugated triarm (star-shaped) polymers consisting of poly(9,9-di--octyl-fluorene-2,7-vinylene) (PFV) arms and different [2,4,6-tri(biphenyl)benzene (TBP), 1,3,5-tri(benzyl)benzene (TBB), and triphenylamine (TPA)] cores, prepared by combined olefin metathesis with Wittig coupling, have been studied. Relative intensities [increases in the higher vibronic bands, (0, 1) fluorescence (FL)] of the fully conjugated TPA-core polymers, TPA(PFV-3T), in the fluorescence (FL) spectra in tetrahydrofuran (toluene) solution were higher than those in the other triarm polymers, TBP(PFV-3T), TBB(PFV-3T), whereas no significant differences were observed in their UV-vis spectra; notable temperature dependences were not observed in the UV-vis and FL spectra (at -5, 25, and 55 °C). Remarkable differences were not observed in the spectra in these polymer thin films, whereas λ values red-shifted due to the formation of -type aggregates.

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of cationic copolymers with different macromolecular architecture and drug delivery properties of the corresponding dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP)-loaded systems. Copolyelectrolytes comprising poly[2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride (PAETMAC) and poly(ethylene glycol) blocks as well as a tri-arm star-shaped PAETMAC were synthesized using cerium(IV) ion-mediated polymerization method. The obtained copolyelectrolytes and corresponding ionic associates with DSP have been characterized by (1)H NMR, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry.
