Biodiesel is a promising alternative, and renewable, fuel. As its production increases, so does production of the principle co-product, crude glycerol. The effective utilization of crude glycerol will contribute to the viability of biodiesel. In this review, composition and quality factors of crude glycerol are discussed. The value-added utilization opportunities of crude glycerol are reviewed. The majority of crude glycerol is used as feedstock for production of other value-added chemicals, followed by animal feeds.

Densification of biomass through pelletizing offers a promising approach to producing clean biofuels from renewable resources. This study, which investigates the impact of additive blends on wheat straw pellet making and upgrading the physiochemical properties, has revealed exciting possibilities. Five additives, including sawdust (SD), bentonite clay (BC), corn starch (S), crude glycerol (CG), and biochar (BioC), were chosen for this study.

The commercial success of micro-biodiesel is currently impeded by the high lipid production cost. Here, a novel non-sterile lipid fermentation strategy was successfully developed by using bifunctional benzamide as selective antibacterial agent and unique nitrogen source. DCW, lipid concentration, and lipid content reached 24.

Nanosized liposomal vesicles (NLV) were successfully prepared using natural sunflower lecithin without the use of high-pressure homogenization or filtration. Upon glycerol addition to dispersions of lecithin multilamellar vesicles (MLVs), these broke down spontaneously to liposomes with diameters in the range of 100-200 nm. Static light scattering demonstrated that glycerol addition above 30% (w/w) induced the complete transformation of MLVs into NLVs.
