We report on the development of an all-interferometric optomechatronic sensor for the detection of multi-degrees-of-freedom displacements of a remote target. The prototype system exploits the self-mixing technique and consists only of a laser head, equipped with six laser sources, and a suitably designed reflective target. The feasibility of the system was validated experimentally for both single or multi-degrees-of-freedom measurements, thus demonstrating a simple and inexpensive alternative to costly and bulky existing systems.

To robustly and adaptively reconstruct displacement, we propose the amplitude modulation integral reconstruction method (AM-IRM) for displacement sensing in a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) system. By algebraically multiplying the SMI signal with a high-frequency sinusoidal carrier, the frequency spectrum of the signal is shifted to that of the carrier. This operation overcomes the issue of frequency blurring in low-frequency signals associated with continuous wavelet transform (CWT), enabling the precise extraction of the Doppler frequency of the SMI signal.

Laser self-mixing is in principle a simple and robust general purpose interferometric method, with the additional expressivity which results from nonlinearity. However, it is rather sensitive to unwanted changes in target reflectivity, which often hinders applications with non-cooperative targets. We present a generalized mathematical model and algorithm for the multi-cavity self-mixing phenomenon based on scattering theory. Scattering theory, which is extensively used for travelling wave is exploited to demonstrate that the self-mixing interference from multiple external cavities can be modelled in terms of individual cavity parameters recursively. The detailed investigation shows that the equivalent reflection coefficient of coupled multiple cavities is a function of both attenuation coefficient and the phase constant, hence propagation constant.

Undamped relaxation oscillation (RO) in a laser self-mixing interferometry (SMI) system may occur in some common application conditions, which may impact the stable operation of the system and degrade its sensing performance. In this work, we proposed to suppress the undamped RO by controlling the system operation parameters in a laser SMI sensing system. By numerically solving the famous Lang Kobayashi equations, the stability of a laser SMI system in a 3-parameter space of external cavity length, injection current and optical feedback factor were investigated.
