Recent experimental and theoretical studies on N-alkylated indanylidene pyrroline Schiff bases (NAIP) show that these compounds exhibit biomimetic photoisomerization analogous to that in the chromophore of rhodopsin. The NAIP compounds studied previously isomerize rapidly and often evolve coherently on the ground-electronic surface after reaction. We present the results of transient electronic absorption spectroscopy on dMe-OMe-NAIP, a newly synthesized NAIP analogue that differs from other NAIP compounds in the substituents on its pyrrolinium ring. Following excitation with 400 nm light, dMe-OMe-NAIP relaxes from the electronic-excited state in less than 500 fs, which is slower than in other analogues, and does not show the prominent oscillations observed in other NAIP compounds. A reduction in the amount of twisting between the rings caused by removal of the methyl group is likely responsible for the slower isomerization. Measurements in solvents of varying viscosity and structure suggest that intramolecular processes dominate the relaxation of nascent photoproducts.

The scarcity of phosphorus (P) resources makes the recovery of P urgent. Sludge is a secondary resource rich in P, and the release of P from it is a key step for recovery. Hydrothermal (HT) is currently a popular method for sludge pretreatment, and its combination with alkaline (alkali-hydrothermal, AHT) could reduce the energy consumption in treatment.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) induces mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 in most cases, but some patients develop an excessive inflammatory process that can be fatal. As the NLRP3 inflammasome and additional inflammasomes are implicated in disease aggravation, drug repositioning to target inflammasomes emerges as a strategy to treat COVID-19. Here, we performed a high-throughput screening using a 2560 small-molecule compound library and identified FDA-approved drugs that function as pan-inflammasome inhibitors.

On the basis of the carbonaceous skeleton assisted thermal hydrolysis that we proposed to achieve efficient sludge dewatering, this work further explored phosphorus (P) transformation in the process. The results showed that during independent thermal hydrolysis in the temperature range of 120-240 °C, organic-P was first decomposed into soluble-P and particulate-P in liquid, and then combined with Ca, Fe, and Al to form more apatite-P (AP) and less non-apatite inorganic-P (NAIP). When the skeleton assisted the sludge thermal hydrolysis, the turning point of the hydrolysis temperature would reduce from 180 °C to 150 °C, at which the liquid-P began to decrease and the organic-P generally decomposed.

Prostaglandins are a group of important cell-signaling molecules involved in the regulation of ovarian maturation, oocyte development, egg laying and associated behaviors in invertebrates. However, the presence of prostaglandin E (PGE), the key enzymes for PGE biosynthesis and its interference by drugs were not investigated previously in the ovary of ticks. The present study was undertaken to assess the modulation of the PGE-mediated pathway in the eclosion blocking effect of flumethrin and terpenoid subfraction isolated from in ticks.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from sewage sludge (SS) have been regarded as an effective method of P recycling. The effects of incineration temperature, incineration time, and chlorine additives on the distribution of P speciation during sludge incineration were studied. Moreover, the reactions between model compounds AlPO and additives (MgCl and CaCl) were investigated by thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction measurements.
