Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

Background: Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE) is a neuropathologically-defined disease, and it is frequently comorbid with Alzheimer's disease neuropathological change (ADNC). However, the neurological syndrome associated with LATE neuropathological change (LATE-NC) is not defined. We propose a set of clinical criteria for a limbic-predominant amnestic neurodegenerative syndrome (LANS) that is highly associated with LATE-NC.

The human neurocranium exhibits significant sexual dimorphism, making it a valuable resource for anthropological studies. This systematic review aggregated and analyzed data from literature on sex differences in neurocranial dimensions as measured by computed tomography (CT). Following registration of the review protocol with PROSPERO (#CRD 42023442451), comprehensive searches were conducted in six databases and gray literature.

Defining, exploring the sources and expressing post-mortem diagnostic uncertainty.

Forensic Sci Med Pathol

December 2024

Forensic Biomedical Sciences, Department of Imaging and Pathology, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnostic uncertainty in post-mortem diagnostics (PMD) arises from the complexity of autopsies and both subjective and objective factors that complicate determining the cause of death.
  • A literature review identified a lack of focused studies on PMD uncertainty, but recognized its presence and introduced a definition as the inability to ascertain the exact cause of death or significance of findings during an autopsy.
  • To address this uncertainty, a new Post-Mortem Diagnostic Certainty Scale (PMDCS) was developed, which categorizes causes of death to improve understanding and interpretation of autopsy results, potentially reducing uncertainty through standardized investigations.

The integration of forensic knowledge and associated practices into a growing number of human rights and humanitarian investigations, as well as transitional justice processes has led some scholars to claim a "forensic turn." This turn is marked by the rise of forensic practices as "necro-governmental" technologies that seek to deliver certainty to the living and to the state so that a new political order can be created, a new future ushered in (Rojas-Perez, 2017, p. 19).
