Ionic liquids are of high interest for the development of safe electrolytes in modern electrochemical cells, such as batteries, supercapacitors and dye-sensitised solar cells. However, electrochemical applications of ionic liquids are still hindered by the limited understanding of the interface between electrode materials and ionic liquids. In this article, we first review the state of the art in both experiment and theory. Then we illustrate some general trends by taking the interface between the extremely pure ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate and an Au(111) electrode as an example. For the study of this interface, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was combined with in situ STM and in situ AFM techniques. In addition, we present new results for the temperature dependence of the interfacial capacitance and dynamics. Since the interfacial dynamics are characterised by different processes taking place on different time scales, the temperature dependence of the dynamics can only be reliably studied by recording and carefully analysing broadband capacitance spectra. Single-frequency experiments may lead to artefacts in the temperature dependence of the interfacial capacitance. We demonstrate that the fast capacitive process exhibits a Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman temperature dependence, since its time scale is governed by the ionic conductivity of the ionic liquid. In contrast, the slower capacitive process appears to be Arrhenius activated. This suggests that the time scale of this process is determined by a temperature-independent barrier, which may be related to structural reorganisations of the Au surface and/or to charge redistributions in the strongly bound innermost ion layer.

Data-driven techniques, such as proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and uniform manifold approximation & projection (UMAP), are powerful methods for understanding polymer behavior in complex systems that extend beyond ideal conditions. They are based on the principle that low-dimensional behaviors are often embedded within the structure and dynamics of complex systems. Here, the internal motions of a thermoresponsive, LCST polymer are investigated for two cases: (1) the coil-to-globule transition that occurs as the system is heated above its critical temperature and (2) intramolecularly crosslinked, single chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) both above and below the critical temperature ().

We design and construct an ultrafast optical spectroscopy instrument that integrates both on-site in situ high-pressure technique and low-temperature tuning capability. Conventional related instruments rely on off-site tuning and calibration of the high pressure. Recently, we have developed an on-site in situ technique, which has the advantage of removing repositioning fluctuation.

This study explored the influence of graphene oxide (GO) on morphological and mechanical properties of Nafion 115 membranes with the objective of enhancing the mechanical properties of the most widely employed membrane in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (PEMWE) applications. The membrane surface was modified by ultrasonically spraying a GO solution and different annealing temperatures were tested. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) cross-sectional images revealed that annealing the composite membranes was sufficient to favor an interaction between the graphene oxide and the surface of the Nafion membranes.

Zwitterionic polymers have garnered significant attention for their distinctive properties, such as biocompatibility, antifouling capabilities, and resistance to protein adsorption, making them promising candidates for a wide range of applications, including drug delivery, oil production inhibitors, and water purification membranes. This study reports the synthesis and characterization of zwitterionic monomers and polymers through the modification of linear, vinyl, and aromatic heterocyclic functional groups via reaction with 1,3-propanesultone. Four zwitterionic polymers with varying molecular structures-ranging from linear to five and six membered ring systems-were synthesized: poly(sulfobetaine methacrylamide) (pSBMAm), poly(sulfobetaine-1-vinylimidazole) (pSB1VI), poly(sulfobetaine-2-vinylpyridine) (pSB2VP), and poly(sulfobetaine-4-vinylpyridine) (pSB4VP).
