Astrocytes critically shape whole-brain structure and function by forming extensive gap junctional networks that intimately and actively interact with neurons. Despite their importance, existing computational models of whole-brain activity ignore the roles of astrocytes while primarily focusing on neurons. Addressing this oversight, we introduce a biophysical neural mass network model, designed to capture the dynamic interplay between astrocytes and neurons via glutamatergic and GABAergic transmission pathways.

Staining brain slices with acetoxymethyl ester (AM) Ca dyes is a straightforward procedure to load multiple cells, and Fluo-4 is a commonly used high-affinity indicator due to its very large dynamic range. It has been shown that this dye preferentially stains glial cells, providing slow and large Ca transients, but it is questionable whether and at which temporal resolution it can also report Ca transients from neuronal cells. Here, by electrically stimulating mouse hippocampal slices, we resolved fast neuronal signals corresponding to 1%-3% maximal fluorescence changes.

Ca excitability of glia to neuromodulator octopamine in Drosophila living brain is greater than that of neurons.

Acta Physiol (Oxf)

Laboratory of Neuroendocrinology-Molecular Cell Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Pathophysiology, University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Aim: Octopamine in the Drosophila brain has a neuromodulatory role similar to that of noradrenaline in mammals. After release from Tdc2 neurons, octopamine/tyramine may trigger intracellular Ca signaling via adrenoceptor-like receptors on neural cells, modulating neurotransmission. Octopamine/tyramine receptors are expressed in neurons and glia, but how each of these cell types responds to octopamine remains elusive.

Side-Gated Iontronic Memtransistor: A Fast and Energy-Efficient Neuromorphic Building Block.

January 2025

eNDR Laboratory, School of Physics, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, Trivandrum, Kerala, 695551, India.

Iontronic memtransistors have emerged as technologically superior to conventional memristors for neuromorphic applications due to their low operating voltage, additional gate control, and enhanced energy efficiency. In this study, a side-gated iontronic organic memtransistor (SG-IOMT) device is explored as a potential energy-efficient hardware building block for fast neuromorphic computing. Its operational flexibility, which encompasses the complex integration of redox activities, ion dynamics, and polaron generation, makes this device intriguing for simultaneous information storage and processing, as it effectively overcomes the von Neumann bottleneck of conventional computing.

Systematic Evaluation of Extracellular Coating Matrix on the Differentiation of Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells to Cortical Neurons.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Neuroimmunomodulation for Neurological Diseases, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Institute of Brain Science, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen 518055, China.

Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons (iNs) have been widely used as models of neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases. Coating cell culture vessels with extracellular matrixes (ECMs) gives structural support and facilitates cell communication and differentiation, ultimately enhances neuronal functions. However, the relevance of different ECMs to the natural environment and their impact on neuronal differentiation have not been fully characterized.
