Does upper lid blepharoplasty improve contrast sensitivity?

Ophthalmic Plast Reconstr Surg

Southampton University Hospital, Southampton SO16 6YD, Hampshire, United Kingdom.

Published: July 2012

Purpose: To assess the effect of upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery on contrast sensitivity.

Methods: A prospective study was performed. Pre- and postoperative contrast sensitivity measurements were taken on patients undergoing routine upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery. The patients were selected for surgery on the basis of a functional visual field effect from dermatochalasis. Contrast sensitivity was measured using a Pelli-Robson chart, read at 1 m under standard lighting conditions. This produces a result in log contrast sensitivity. Other data collected included visual acuity and an automated 60:4 visual field. A paired t test was used to assess the change in contrast sensitivity.

Results: 28 eyes of 14 patients underwent upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery. The mean preoperative log contrast sensitivity was 1.49, and the mean postoperative log contrast sensitivity was 1.64. The mean increase in log contrast sensitivity was 0.14 (range 0-0.45). The increase in log contrast sensitivity was statistically significant (p = 0.00002).

Conclusions: Dermatochalasis is well known to cause visual field defects in many patients. Anecdotally, patients often report that their vision is brighter following upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The authors have demonstrated a significant increase in contrast sensitivity in patients who have undergone upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery. This information may be of use in justifying blepharoplasty surgery in the future.

Basal ganglia germinomas are uncommon neoplasms. Basal ganglia germinomas exhibit high sensitivity to both radiation therapy and chemotherapy. In contrast, surgery is the standard treatment for most primary brain tumors (such as gliomas, which are the most common tumors in the pediatric basal ganglia region).

Silencing of STEAP3 suppresses cervical cancer cell proliferation and migration via JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway.

Cancer Metab

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, First Affiliated Hospital, Shihezi University, Shihezi, China.

Article Synopsis
  • STEAP3 is a critical protein associated with cervical cancer (CC) progression, showing strong expression in CC tissues and linked to poor patient prognosis.
  • The study employed various methods, such as immunohistochemistry and RNA sequencing, to investigate STEAP3's role, revealing that lower methylation levels of STEAP3 are connected to worse outcomes.
  • Knockdown of STEAP3 in CC cells reduced their growth and invasion abilities while enhancing drug sensitivity, suggesting STEAP3 drives cancer cell activity through the activation of the JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway.

Accurate and sensitive fluorescence imaging of biothiols is essential for understanding the mechanism underlying some physiological and pathological events, as well as the prevention and diagnosis of diseases. However, low signal transduction efficiency and poor biocompatibility of fluorescence tags associated with current sensors hinder their potential utilizations. Herein, a smart biothiols sensitive vivo imaging platform on the basis of amplifying nanoprobe has been designed.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the diagnostic efficacy of conventional ultrasound (CUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in detecting fat-poor angiomyolipomas(AML) with dimensions less than 5 cm. Additionally, the study seeks to identify independent indicators for predicting the presence of fat-poor AML.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with renal AML and renal cell carcinoma, who were admitted and underwent surgery at Fujian Provincial Hospital from January 2013 to October 2023.
