Aims: Drug-refractory epilepsy (DRE) refers to the failure of controlling seizures with adequate trials of two tolerated and appropriately chosen anti-seizure medications (ASMs). For patients with DRE, surgical intervention becomes the most effective and viable treatment, but its success rate is unsatisfactory at only approximately 50%. Predicting surgical outcomes in advance can provide additional guidance to clinicians.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) in children with epilepsy and their caregivers, as well as the caregiver burden, through a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional online survey in Japan.

Methods: Eligible participants were caregivers of children (aged < 18 years) diagnosed with epilepsy. Children's QOL was measured using the daily living subset of the Japanese version of the Quality of Life in Children with Epilepsy (QOLCE-Js52).

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Neurology, National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore, Singapore, Singapore, Singapore.

Background: Epilepsy is associated with increased risk for dementia, which adversely impacts the quality of life for patients and their families. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the prodromal stage of dementia offering an important window for intervention. However, the epilepsy related risk factors for MCI are not well understood.

Epilepsy Behav

December 2024

Department of Neurology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, PR China; Key Laboratory of Alzheimer's Disease of Zhejiang Province, Institute of Aging, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, PR China. Electronic address:

Introduction: We aim to identify risk factors that predict refractory convulsive status epilepticus (RCSE) and to develop a model for early recognition of patients at high risk for RCSE.

Methods: This study involved 200 patients diagnosed with convulsive status epilepticus (CSE), of whom 73 were RCSE and 127 were non-RCSE. Variables included demographic information, lifestyle factors, medical history, comorbidities, clinical symptoms, neuroimaging characteristics, laboratory tests, and nutritional scores.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) in localizing the seizure onset zone (SOZ) in epilepsy surgery through comparison with other methods like EEG and surgical outcomes.
  • Over 9,500 articles were reviewed, leading to 25 that met inclusion criteria, highlighting various comparative modalities, with rs-fMRI showing significant variability in agreement when compared to different methods.
  • Results showed that surgical outcomes had better agreement with rs-fMRI than EEG and intracranial EEG, and the study provided meaningful insights into the heterogeneity of SOZ identification using rs-fMRI techniques.
