This paper presents principles of otorhinolaryngological mass-scale examination of industrial workers exposed to noise and dust. They require not only early detection of pathologies of the hearing organ and upper airways but also assessment of the health status of each person and identification of groups at risk. Dynamic observation over healthy and sick subjects as well as proper application of prophylactic and therapeutic measures helps maintain good health and high performance of industrial workers.

Perioperative antibiotic practices amongst otorhinolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat surgeons) in South Africa.

S Afr J Surg

October 2024

Division of Otorhinolaryngology, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Background: The primary goal of perioperative antibiotics is to reduce the rate of surgical site infections (SSI); however, in certain surgical procedures, the use of perioperative antibiotics has been shown to have no impact on the rate of SSI. Inappropriate use of antimicrobials increases cost, potential side effects and further promotes antibiotic resistance. This study aims to provide insight into the adherence of South African otorhinolaryngologists to available evidence-based international guidelines.

Scuba diving and other modes of device-supported diving are popular activities that can be especially demanding and hazardous for people with preexisting physical conditions. Due to the high ambient pressure, the temperature differences, and potential unpredictable events, which have manifold effects on the organism, diving carries a high risk of life-threatening disease. A special risk is present if the body does not readily equalize air pressure changes.

Case Report: Two cases of survival after complete transection of the left common carotid artery.

Front Surg

February 2023

Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital, Qingdao University, Yantai, China.

Penetrating carotid artery traumas are rare yet fatal injuries with a high rate of mortality, and survivors may live with neurological sequelae. Of all the types of penetrating carotid artery traumas, the total transection of the common carotid artery (CCA) may be the most serious, can lead to death quickly, and has few reports of survivors. We described two cases of patients with complete CCA transections who survived without any neurological sequelae.
