Pelvic computed tomography (CT) scans of forty five young adults were reviewed and the alpha angle was calculated. The patients were selected on the basis of an age of less than 40 years and the absence of any CT evidence of previous hip pathology. An alpha angle of >55º was considered positive for cam morphology. The non-arthritic hip score and the University of California Los Angeles activity score were completed by the selected group of patients. The mean age of the individuals was 33 years (range, 20 to 40). The mean alpha angle at the superoinferior position of the anterosuperior quadrant of the femoral neck was 50.1º on the right side and 49.6º on the left. The prevalence of cam morphology was found to be 20% in the right hip and 17.7% in the left hip. There was a relatively higher prevalence of cam morphology in men. We also compared the functional scores of patients with an alpha angle >55º and those with an alpha angle =55º. We found no statistically significant difference between the two groups for both scores.

Massive Dirac fermions, which are essential for realizing novel topological phenomena, are expected to be generated from massless Dirac fermions by breaking the related symmetry, such as time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators or crystal symmetry in topological crystalline insulators. Here, we report scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of α-Bi_{4}I_{4}, which reveals the realization of massive Dirac fermions in the (100) surface states without breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Combined with first-principles calculations, our experimental results indicate that the spontaneous symmetry breaking engenders two nondegenerate edge states at the opposite sides of monolayer Bi_{4}I_{4} after the structural phase transition, imparting mass to the Dirac fermions after taking the interlayer coupling into account.

α-Klotho (KLA) is a type-1 membranous protein that can associate with fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) to form co-receptor for FGF23. The ectodomain of unassociated KLA is shed as soluble KLA (sKLA) to exert FGFR/FGF23-independent pleiotropic functions. The previously determined X-ray crystal structure of the extracellular region of sKLA in complex with FGF23 and FGFR1c suggests that sKLA functions solely as an on-demand coreceptor for FGF23.

Statement Of Problem: The angled screw channel (ASC) design has been well accepted for implant prostheses. However, investigation into the behavior of the ASC connection is sparse.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the effect of cyclic loading on the internal connection of an ASC system compared with straight access systems by measuring reverse torque values (RTVs) and using microcomputed tomography (µCT) imaging.

Optimizing time in harness.

Bone Joint J

January 2025

Division of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, USA.

Aims: The primary aims of this study were to determine the time to sonographic correction of decentred hips during treatment with Pavlik harness for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and investigate potential risk factors for a delayed response to treatment.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of infants with decentred hips who underwent a comprehensive management protocol with Pavlik harness between 2012 and 2016. Ultrasound assessments were performed at standardized intervals and time to correction from centring of the femoral head was quantified.

Purpose: To devise a mathematical model for estimating the intraoperative lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) tilt angle using preoperative supine left side-bending (LSB) radiographs in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients with Lenke type 1 and 2 (non-AR curves), and to review its clinical and radiological outcomes.

Methods: The mathematical model for the adjusted LSB LIV tilt angle (α) measured preoperatively, was expressed as the sum of preoperative LSB LIV tilt angle (x) and LIV displacement angle (y) (α = x + y). This model was validated through inter-rater and intra-rater analysis in Part I of the study.
