AI Article Synopsis

  • The study explores the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) levels and varicocele in 60 affected individuals compared to 57 healthy controls.
  • Significant findings show that MPV levels are higher in varicocele patients, with a notable correlation between MPV, varicocele grade, and the size of the left spermatic vein.
  • The research concludes that elevated MPV is linked to varicocele severity and indicates a potential role of vascular factors in the condition's development, suggesting further investigation into platelet behavior in varicocele patients.

Article Abstract

Objective: To examine the relationship between the mean platelet volume (MPV) and varicocele to clarify the etiopathogenesis of varicocele.

Methods: MPV levels were measured in 60 varicocele subjects (group I) and 57 healthy controls (group II) from 2009-2010. Ages were similar between the 2 groups. The diagnosis of varicocele was based on the findings from both physical examination and color Doppler ultrasound.

Results: The average patient age at the time of examination was 28.12 ± 6.4 years in group I and 28.10 ± 5.8 in group II. MPV levels were statistically significantly higher in group I than in group II (P < .001). Positive correlations were found between MPV and varicocele grade as between MPV and diameter of left spermatic vein (P < .05).

Conclusion: The increase in MPV is independent of the disease, and the increase in varicocele grade is associated with higher MPV in varicocele patients. On the basis of the importance of the vascular component in the pathophysiology of varicocele, we would suggest conducting more studies with platelets in varicocele patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a nomogram using blood inflammation markers to predict infertility risk in patients with varicocele (VC), analyzing data from 162 patients divided into infertile and fertile groups.
  • Statistical differences in various blood markers were found between the two groups, and the patients were split into modeling and validation cohorts to develop the nomogram.
  • The predictive nomogram showed strong performance, with an area under the curve of 0.869, but the authors emphasized the need for further external validation to confirm its effectiveness.

Objective: To delve into the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) and semen quality in patients with varicocele.

Materials And Methods: A total of 246 varicocele patients and 120 healthy adult males were enrolled. Physical examinations and the color Doppler ultrasonography were conducted on patients with varicocele to confirm the diagnosis.

Objective: Varicocele is the abnormal enlargement of the pampiniform plexus in the scrotum and is one of the diseases that have negative consequences on reproduction in men today. The aim of this study is to investigate the pathophysiological role of inflammatory parameters in patients diagnosed with varicocele.

Patients And Methods: Patients who applied to Viransehir state hospital urology outpatient clinic between January 2016 and January 2022 were evaluated retrospectively.

The objective of this study was to evaluate inflammatory markers as predictors of fertility after varicocelectomy and to develop a prediction model. This prospective cohort was conducted on patients with varicoceles who were presented to the clinic of Imam Reza hospital of Tehran during 2019-2020. Semen analysis, complete blood count (CBC), and scrotal ultrasonography was requested.

The present study investigated the sperm quality parameters and platelet indices in adolescent and adult varicocele rats. Twenty male Wistar rats were distributed into four groups (n = 5): I-sham adolescent group, II-sham adult group, III-varicocele adolescent group, and IV-varicocele adult group. Rats were sacrificed on the 61st day of the experiment.
