Acute ischemic stroke, a medical emergency caused by reduced cerebral blood flow, results in brain cell damage. While commonly associated with older individuals, strokes can also occur in young and middle-aged adults, posing significant socio-economic and health challenges due to the long-term impact of the condition. This poses significant socio-economic and health challenges because stroke is a leading cause of disability and mortality.

Relevance of superoxide dismutase type 1 to lipoid pneumonia: the first retrospective case-control study.

Respir Res

Background: Lipoid pneumonia (LP) is a rare disease caused by the accumulation of lipids and lipid-laden macrophages in the alveoli inducing damage. LP is difficult to differentiate from other similar diseases without pathological evidence, such as upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), pneumonia, cryptogenic organizing pneumonia (COP), pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP), lung mucinous adenocarcinoma and pulmonary edema. Given the high misdiagnosis rate and limited statistical clinical and treatment data, there is an urgent need for novel indicators of LP.

Ulcerative colitis can present with extra-intestinal manifestations, including interstitial lung disease and primary sclerosing cholangitis. When pulmonary symptoms precede gastrointestinal, diagnosis can be challenging. Consideration of Ulcerative colitis in patients with unexplained lung and hepatic pathology is crucial, as a failure of timely intervention can lead to multiorgan complications.

Objectives: To identify the diagnostic criteria for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) related to liver fibrosis and to characterize patients with cryptogenic steatotic liver disease (SLD) (non-MASLD) among those previously diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included 511 patients diagnosed with NAFLD via liver biopsy, and the prevalence of MASLD was assessed based on the diagnostic criteria. Patients were divided into those who met the MASLD criteria and those who did not, and the characteristics of advanced fibrosis and associated cardiometabolic factors were evaluated.

The relationship between left atrial enlargement (LAE) and primary cryptogenic stroke (PCS) remains a mystery. LAE has been proposed to be an independent risk factor of PCS, recurrent ischemic strokes, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and thromboembolism. Our study evaluates the prevalence of LAE among patients with PCS in the absence of atrial fibrillation, unlike previous studies that included atrial fibrillation, in order to isolate LAE as a risk factor.
