PTH (1-34) daily subcutaneous injection is a bone anabolic agent. It has already been approved in more than 80 countries over the world (including Europe and United States) and in Japan on Jul 2010. The number of patients treated with this agent is more than 20 thousand in Japan and about one million over the world. In nonclinical studies, teriparatide was shown to have a unique bone formation-stimulating effect not seen in existing drugs. In domestic and overseas clinical studies, teriparatide was shown to have strong effects in increasing BMD, promoting remodeling of bone microstructure and suppressing the onset of fracture. Furthermore, it can increase BMD through stimulation of bone formation regardless of the nature of prior treatment or the presence/absence of responses to prior treatment. With these features, teriparatide is expected to serve as a first-line drug for management of patients with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture.

Objective: Some cells in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) cartilage undergo proliferation in response to negative pressure, which can be induced in vivo by creating bilateral anterior elevation (BAE). TMJ cartilage harbours CD90-expressing cells, and CD90 expression increases under certain controlled conditions. The parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) nuclear localization segment (NLS) promotes chondrocyte proliferation, and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signalling plays a regulatory role in promoting PTHrP transcription.

Objective: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in children can cause hypocalcaemia and rickets, but the prevalence of these complications and the 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations below which they arise is uncertain. We investigated this in children (< 18 years) with 25OHD measurements.
Design, Measurement And Patients: We obtained 25OHD results from the regional laboratory database, alongside albumin-adjusted serum calcium (aCa), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) within 6 months of the index 25OHD.

Materials And Methods: Children (n = 148) aged 7 to 18 years old were involved in the study. Bone mineral density (BMD) is given in 3 grades according to the mean square deviation values, namely Grade I - standard (n = 75),Grade II - reduced (n = 45) and Grade III - very low one (n = 28).
