In ten patients treated by maintenance hemodialysis due to end-stage renal failure evaluation of dialysis efficiency was performed during the treatment with heparin alone as well as in the course of prostacyclin -heparin infusion. Statistically significant lower level of urea at the end of dialysis and significantly higher urea clearance were found during hemodialysis with prostacyclin -heparin infusion in comparison with infusion of heparin alone.

Type II heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (type II HITT) is a rare but serious complication in patients receiving heparin for anticoagulation. In type II HITT, an immune-mediated reaction against platelet factor four-heparin complexes results in thrombocytopenia and an elevated risk of thrombosis. This poses significant challenges for patients with advanced heart failure requiring urgent left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation.

An 8-year-old Leonberger receiving immunosuppressive treatment with clinical signs of acute dyspnea, cyanosis, and difficulty standing was referred to our institution (Day 1). Treatment including oxygen, clopidogrel, and low-molecular-weight heparin was initiated for suspected pulmonary thrombosis. However, exertional dyspnea persisted until Day 10, and increased tricuspid regurgitation velocity, pulmonary vascular resistance, and McConnell's signs also were observed.

Background: Haemodialysis (HD) requires safe and effective anticoagulation to prevent clot formation within the extracorporeal circuit during dialysis treatments to enable adequate dialysis and minimise adverse events, including major bleeding. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) may provide a more predictable dose, reliable anticoagulant effects and be simpler to administer than unfractionated heparin (UFH) for HD anticoagulation, but may accumulate in the kidneys and lead to bleeding.
Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of anticoagulation strategies (including both heparin and non-heparin drugs) for long-term HD in people with kidney failure.
