Anthocyanins are antioxidants and are among the natural products synthesized via the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway. Anthocyanins have been recommended for dietary intake in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and age-related conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia. With an increasingly aging population in many parts of the world, strategies for the commercial production of in vitro synchronized red cell cultures as natural antioxidants will be a significant contribution to human medicine. Red pigmented fruits such as grapes (Vitis sp.) are a major source of bioavailable anthocyanins and other polyphenols. Since the level of antioxidants varies among cultivars, this study is the first one that phytochemically and genetically characterizes native grape cultivars of North America to determine the optimal cultivar and berry cells for the production of anthocyanins as antioxidants. Using real-time PCR and bioinformatics approaches, we tested for the transcript expression of the chalcone synthase (CHS) gene, an enzyme involved in the flavonoid and anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, in different parts of physiologically mature grape berries and in vitro synchronized red cells. A low level of expression was recorded in berry flesh, compared with an elevated expression in berry skins and in vitro synchronized red cells, suggesting increased production of flavonoids in skin and cell cultures. This preliminary study demonstrates the potential of functional genomics in natural products research as well as in systematic studies of North American native grapes, specifically in muscadine (Vitis rotundifolia).

The synchronization of parasites as they replicate within red blood cells of their vertebrate host remains largely unexplored. Understanding this synchronization could reveal how parasites optimize their lifecycle to maximize transmission, evade the immune response and maximize energy acquisition. Rhythmic replication fulfils some criteria of an endogenous oscillator with time of day cues potentially provided by temperature, oxygen levels, hormones and/or nutrient availability.

Rapid, sensitive, and accurate detection of heavy metal ions is significant for human health and ecological security. Herein, a novel single-stranded DNA with poly(thymidine) tail is tactfully designed as template to synthesize dual-emission silver nanoclusters (ssDNA-AgNCs). The obtained AgNCs simultaneously emit red and green fluorescence, and the red emission can be selectively quenched by Hg, meanwhile the green emission of AgNCs increases synchronously.

A sensitized dual-response ratiometric fluorescent sensor integrated smartphone platform for accurate discrimination and detection of tetracycline (TC) homologues was fabricated based on N-CDs-Eu complex. In the sensing system, N-CDs act as a sensitizer of Eu and significantly enhance the fluorescence of TC-Eu complex approximate 40-fold owing to the synergistic effect of antenna effect (AE) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). A paper sensor integrated with a smartphone platform is further fabricated for on-site measurement of TC.

In nature, nontoxic protein amyloids serve as dynamic, protein-specific depots, exemplified by both bacterial inclusion bodies and secretory granules from the endocrine system. Inspired by these systems, chemically defined and regulatory-compliant artificial protein microgranules have been developed for clinical applications as endocrine-like protein repositories. This has been achieved by exploiting the reversible coordination between histidine residues and divalent cations such as Zn, that promotes protein-protein interactions.
