Processing and utilization of palm date fruits for edible applications.

The date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifra L., family: Palmaceae) is perhaps the oldest and most important fruit crop in the Middle East and North Africa. From this region, the tree spread to other parts of the world and is cultivated in some parts of USA. About 6-7 Million tons of date fruits, belonging to a large variety of cultivars with different characteristics, are produced annually. The date fruit is mainly composed of sugars (invert sugars and/or sucrose) and fiber and, as such, can find a wide range of applications. However, processing applications of the date fruits are limited and new possibilities need to be exploited. This paper reviews the state-of-art knowledge on the compositional and technological aspects and patents pertinent to the processing and utilization of date fruits.

Background: A cylindrical free-air chamber, the Attix FAC, is used for absolute air-kerma measurements of low-energy photon beams at the University of Wisconsin Medical Radiation Research Center. Correction factors for air-kerma measurements of specific beams were determined in the 1990s. In order to measure air-kerma rates of beams in development, new correction factors must be computed.

Macrocycles or medium-sized rings offer diverse functionality and stereochemical complexity in a well-organized ring structure, allowing them to fulfill various biochemical functions, resulting in high affinity and selectivity for protein targets, while preserving sufficient bioavailability to reach intracellular compartments. These features have made macrocycles attractive candidates in organic synthesis and drug discovery. Since the 20th century, more than three-score macrocyclic drugs, including radiopharmaceuticals, have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating bacterial and viral infections, cancer, obesity, immunosuppression, inflammatory, and neurological disorders, managing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and more.
