The inner shell excitation of CuPc, NiPc, and H(2)Pc phthalocyanines at both C and N K-edges has been investigated theoretically by density functional theory calculations. The selected molecules allow one to study the effect on the spectra of the presence and the nature of the atom in the central cavity of the macrocycle. The individual characteristics of the spectra can be rationalized in terms of the position of the unequivalent C and N atomic sites, showing that sensible changes are present in the spectral features deriving from the N atoms directly bound to the atom at the center of the Pc macrocycle. The minor variations present in the spectral C 1s profiles of the phthalocyanines reflect the little perturbation experienced by the peripheral atomic sites.

Electron transfer is key to the operation of devices based on molecular (organic) semiconductors. Others have shown that electron transfer in the solid state often proceeds on sub-50 fs timescales, the details of which can be difficult to temporally resolve using pump-probe spectroscopy. A popular technique to measure average time scales for such rapid electron-transfer events is the core-hole clock implementation of resonant Auger electron spectroscopy at a single X-ray absorption edge.

The unoccupied electronic structure of thick films of tetraphenylporphyrin and tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin Cu(ii) complexes (hereafter, CuTPP and CuTPP(F)) deposited on Au(111) has been studied by combining the outcomes of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy with those of spin-unrestricted time-dependent density functional (TD-DFT) calculations carried out either within the scalar relativistic zeroth order regular approximation (ZORA) framework (C, N and F K-edges) or by using the Tamm-Dancoff approximation coupled to ZORA and including spin-orbit effects (Cu L2,3-edges). Similarly to the modelling of NEXAFS outcomes pertaining to other Cu(ii) complexes, the agreement between theory and experiment is more than satisfactory, thus confirming the open-shell TD-DFT to be a useful tool to look into NEXAFS results pertinent to Cu(ii) compounds. The combined effect of metalation and phenyl (Ph) fluorine decoration is found to favour an extensive mixing between (Ph)σ* and pristine porphyrin macrocyle (pmc) (pmc)π* virtual levels.

The electronic structure study of carbon nanotube-graphene complexes has been performed using comprehensive X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at Fe L- and K-edges, along with C, N and O K-edges. The results obtained from the study of an iron-containing carbon nanotube-graphene complex (NT-G) have been compared in great detail with those of an iron-free carbon nanotube-graphene complex (pNT-G) and iron phthalocyanine (FePc). It has been confirmed that complex-like Fe(3+) in a high spin state is the major iron component in NT-G.

Phthalocyanines, a class of macrocyclic, square planar molecules, are extensively studied as semiconductor materials for chemical sensors, dye-sensitized solar cells, and other applications. In this study, we use angular dependent near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy as a quantitative probe of the orientation and electronic structure of H2-, Fe-, Co-, and Cu-phthalocyanine molecular thin films. NEXAFS measurements at both the carbon and nitrogen K-edges reveal that phthalocyanine films deposited on sapphire have upright molecular orientations, while films up to 50 nm thick deposited on gold substrates contain prostrate molecules.
