Haptic handles for robotic surgery.

Stud Health Technol Inform

Robotic Systems Lab LSRO, EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland.

Published: May 2012

Robotic surgery, i.e. master-slave telemanipulators for surgery, is rapidly developing. One of the key components is the surgeon's console, and, within the console, especially the "handles" (the "joysticks") for manipulation control. Two examples of haptic (force-feedback) handle designs developed and realized at the LSRO lab are briefly presented along with design considerations (ergonomics, usability). Incidence on patient safety and patient benefit and future trends in this field are hinted at, especially the possibilities offered VR in this context.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the outcomes of robotic peritoneal flap vaginoplasty.

Background: There is a lack of long-term outcomes data for gender-affirming vaginoplasty to inform patient decision-making.

Methods: A retrospective cohort of 500 consecutive patients undergoing robotic peritoneal flap vaginoplasty from 2017-2023 were reviewed.

: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with worse surgical outcomes, and is a risk factor for bladder cancer and subsequent oncological outcomes. This study evaluated outcomes robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) compared to open radical cystectomy (ORC) in patients with DM. : Data of adults ≥ 18 years old with DM who underwent radical cystectomy were extracted from the United States National Inpatient Sample database 2005-2018.

Background And Objective: Thymic epithelial tumors, including thymomas and thymic carcinomas, represent the most common mediastinal tumors and account for up to 50% of all anterior mediastinal tumors. For early stages of these thymic tumors, complete resection of the entire thymus is the recommended treatment. The transition from open surgery to video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and recently to robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) has fundamentally altered the treatment of thymic tumors.

Speech-mediated manipulation of da Vinci surgical system for continuous surgical flow.

Biomed Eng Lett

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Seoul National University College of Medicine, 103 Daehak-ro, Jongno- gu, Seoul, 03080 Republic of Korea.

Unlabelled: With the advent of robot-assisted surgery, user-friendly technologies have been applied to the da Vinci surgical system (dVSS), and their efficacy has been validated in worldwide surgical fields. However, further improvements are required to the traditional manipulation methods, which cannot control an endoscope and surgical instruments simultaneously. This study proposes a speech recognition control interface (SRCI) for controlling the endoscope via speech commands while manipulating surgical instruments to replace the traditional method.

In recent years, robotic assistance has become increasingly used and applied in minimally invasive surgeries. A new cooperative surgical robot system that includes a joystick-guided robotic scope holder was developed in this study, and its feasibility for use in minimally invasive abdominal surgery was evaluated in a preclinical setting. The cooperative surgical robot consists of a six-degree-of-freedom collaborative robot arm and a one-degree-of-freedom bidirectional telescopic end-effector specializing in surgical assistance.
