A sulfinyl group in an ortho position confers enough chemical and configurational stability to monofluorobenzylcarbanions to evolve in a completely stereoselective way in their reactions with β-substituted vinyl sulfones and α,β-unsaturated esters. Reactions afford easily separable mixtures of two epimers differing in the configuration of the center derived from the Michael acceptor (up to 98% de). They can be easily converted into enantiomerically pure γ-fluorinated γ-phenylsulfones and γ-phenylesters bearing two chiral centers.

New World alphaviruses, including Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), and western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), are mosquito-transmitted viruses that cause disease in humans. These viruses are endemic to the western hemisphere, and disease in humans may lead to encephalitis and long-term neurological sequelae. There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or antiviral therapeutics available for the prevention or treatment of diseases caused by these viruses.

Sodium salt of aryl sulfinic acid reacts with enynone in a different manner, yielding α-furyl sulfone and stereodefined vinyl sulfone in toluene and EtOH respectively in the presence of ZnCl. The salient features of this protocol include chemoselectivity, broad substrate scope, high efficiency, high yield, and easy purification. The synthetic utilities of the products are demonstrated by cycloaddition and cis-trans photoisomerization reactions.

Conventional two-dimensional (2D) cardiomyocyte differentiation protocols create cells with limited maturity, which impairs their predictive capacity and has driven interest in three-dimensional (3D) engineered cardiac tissue models of varying maturity and scalability. Cardiac spheroids are attractive high-throughput models that have demonstrated improved functional and transcriptional maturity over conventional 2D differentiations. However, these 3D models still tend to have limited contractile and electrical maturity compared to highly engineered cardiac tissues; hence, we incorporated a library of conductive polymer microfibers in cardiac spheroids to determine if fiber properties could accelerate maturation.

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a painful inflammatory condition that limits mouth opening. Cell-derived exosomes, which have anti-inflammatory effects, are emerging as a treatment for TMJOA. Injection of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), which secrete exosomes, can moderate tissue damage in a rat model of TMJOA.

Soft actuators with multi-stimuli response have shown promising applications in soft intelligent robots. However, most soft actuators are limited by the unidirectional actuation and self-perception capabilities. Here, a bilayer self-sensing actuator with bidirectional actuation is proposed, which showed exceptional bidirectional actuation, self-sensing of temperature and moisture, and smart solar panel.
