Tob Control

Northeastern University, School of Law, Boston, MA 02115, USA.

Published: March 2012

Product liability litigation has made important contributions to tobacco control, especially by uncovering incriminating industry documents and publicizing product dangers and industry misconduct. WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 19 encourages Parties to strengthen legal procedures to facilitate these lawsuits and to establish mechanisms for mutual assistance. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping mobility through autonomous vehicles (AVs), which may introduce risks such as technical malfunctions, cybersecurity threats, and ethical dilemmas in decision-making. Despite these complexities, the influence of consumers' risk preferences on AV acceptance remains poorly understood. This study explores how individuals' risk preferences affect their choices among private AVs (PAVs), shared AVs (SAVs), and private conventional vehicles (PCVs).

Effects of biochar on soil contaminated by metals and metalloids from slag disposal of an old environmental liability in Ribeira Valley, Brazil.

J Environ Manage

December 2024

Department of Geotechnical Engineering, São Carlos School of Engineering, University of São Paulo, São Carlos, SP, 13560-970, Brazil. Electronic address:

Contamination with potentially toxic metals and metalloids (PTMs) in mining areas poses significant environment and human health risks. Using biochar as an amendment can be a cost-effective and eco-friendly method to reduce PTM bioavailability in contaminated soils, thus lowering plant uptake. This study investigated biochar derived from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) at three pyrolysis temperatures (300, 500, and 700 °C) and two application rates (1% and 5%, w/w) for the remediation of slag-contaminated soils from an old environmental liability in the Ribeira Valley (Brazil).

Strategies for automated affinity purification-resin screening for non-traditional biopharmaceuticals in the discovery space.

J Pharm Biomed Anal

December 2024

Analytical Research & Development, Merck & Co., Inc., Boston, MA 02115, USA. Electronic address:

Biotherapeutics occupy a significant portion of the pharmaceutical pipeline and are projected to continue growing in sales and scope. Further, the field is advancing novel and more complex molecules beyond monoclonal antibodies including multi-target proteins, engineered proteins and bioconjugates. In this aspect, the development of increasingly advanced and challenging therapies necessitates a commiserate degree of innovation to develop automated methods for resin screening, purification, and analytics in the discovery space to quickly identify liabilities and rank candidates with minimal impact on developmental resources.
