Background: Transient tachypnea of neonate (TTN) and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) of the newborn are the most common cause of early respiratory distress in the immediate neonatal period. There is increasing evidence to support the role for the activation of the renin angiotensin system during acute lung injury.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) I/D polymorphism, ACE activity and TTN and respiratory distress syndromes.
Methods: Nineteen neonates with TTN, 20 neonates with RDS and 21 control infants are studied for ACE polymorphism and serum ACE activity.
Results: Twenty six (43.3%) patients have DD polymorphism, 19 (31.7%) patients have ID polymorphism and 15 (25%) patients have II polymorphism. Serum ACE activity is 43.5 ± 1.8 (40-46) U/L in DD, 31.5 ± 2.3 (28-36) U/L in ID and 22.1 ± 2.1(19-46) U/L in II patient.
Conclusions: The study could not find any difference in DD alleles and ACE activity between control group and TTN group. ACE polymorphism was not different between RDS group and control group in this study.

Porcine teschovirus (PTV) is a devastating virus that targets the central nervous system and led to great economic losses in Europe between the 1920s and 1960s. Since 1973, PTV variants with lower pathogenicity have been prevalent globally, whereas highly pathogenic PTV strains have rarely emerged. In 2022, diarrhea with high mortality occurred on a pig farm in Gansu China.

Background: Inspiratory and expiratory muscle training (RMT) has been shown to have beneficial effects in individuals with long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms.
Objective: To assess the effects of adding RMT to an aerobic exercise (AE) training program for health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and exercise tolerance in individuals with long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms, and to evaluate the effects on physical and lung function, and psychological status.
Methods: 64 individuals with long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms of fatigue and dyspnoea were randomly assigned to AE+RMT or AE+RMT groups for an 8-wk intervention (AE: 50min/day, 2 times/wk; RMT: 40min/day, 3 times/wk).

Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are the result of an exaggerated inflammatory response triggered by a variety of pulmonary and systemic insults. The lung tissues are comprised of a variety of cell types, including alveolar epithelial cells, pulmonary vascular endothelial cells, macrophages, neutrophils, and others. There is mounting evidence that these diverse cell populations within the lung interact to regulate lung inflammation in response to both direct and indirect stimuli.

Acute cardiovascular disorders are incriminated in up to 33% of maternal deaths, and the presence of sickle cell anemia (SCA) aggravates the risk of peripartum complications. Herein, we present a 24-year-old Caribbean woman with known SCA who developed a vaso-occlusive crisis at 36 weeks of gestation that required emergency Cesarean section. In the early postpartum period, she experienced fever with rapid onset of acute respiratory distress in the context of COVID-19 infection that required tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilatory support with broad-spectrum antibiotics and blood exchange transfusion.
