Unlabelled: Obesity has recently become an epidemic. The rise in the childhood obesity incidence is of particular concern. High density caloric diets and physical inactivity are the main causes of obesity. Besides that, is generally accepted that obesity has a genetic predisposition, unchanged for the past few decades. The environment via endocrine disruptors might be, at least partly responsible for the globally obesity epidemic. Endocrine disruptors are environmental chemical compounds produced by human activity that either mimic or block hormonal actions. Many of them modulate lipid metabolism and adipogenesis, contributing to obesity initiation and/or exacerbation. Here we provide an overview of the role of the environmental chemical obesogens and their impact on obesity.

Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) may contribute to the rising incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). We investigated the potential of 10 environmentally relevant EDCs to affect key events of hepatic steatosis in HepG2 human hepatoma cells. Increased lipid droplet formation, a key marker of steatosis, was induced by PFOA, bisphenol F, DDE, butylparaben, and DEHP, within the non-cytotoxic concentration range of 1 nM-25 μM.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) can mimic or interfere with hormones in the body, leading to non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Susceptibility to EDs increases during prenatal and postnatal life, a critical time window. Tert-butyl phenolic antioxidants (TBP-AOs) are employed to inhibit oxidation and function as stabilizers and protectants in a broad spectrum of consumer products, such as food packaging, adhesives, lubricants, plastics, and cosmetics. The extensive utilization of TBP-AOs results in human exposure through various pathways. Furthermore, some TBP-AOs have been identified as potential endocrine disruptors and may cause liver and lung damage, as well as allergic reactions.
