Purpose: Tadalafil (Cialis) is a potent phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor that is widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors have long been recognized to cause temporary and minor visual changes.

Methods: We report for the first time a case of visual disturbances due to reversible damage to the parafoveal photoreceptors following the use of tadalafil. The patient was examined using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy combined with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Results: Spectral domain OCT of the right eye revealed a hyperreflective dense area and the appearance of a serous retinal detachment (SRD). The photoreceptors' internal segment-outer segment (IS-OS) interface was thickened and markedly hyperreflective without distinguishable deposits. The increased hyperreflectivity of the IS-OS interface created a hyporeflective space behind which mimicked the appearance of a SRD. The use of tadalafil was discontinued and the patient examined 2 months later. Spectral domain OCT revealed disappearance of the dense area and the pseudo-SRD. The associated symptoms resolved rapidly with discontinuation of the drug.

Conclusions: Tadalafil use may be associated with reversible damage to the photoreceptors and corresponding visual symptoms.

Background: Photon-counting computed tomography (CT) is an advanced imaging technique that enables multi-energy imaging from a single scan. However, the limited photon count assigned to narrow energy bins leads to increased quantum noise in the reconstructed spectral images. To address this issue, leveraging the prior information in the spectral images is essential.

Purpose: To develop and evaluate a physics-driven, saturation contrast-aware, deep-learning-based framework for motion artifact correction in CEST MRI.

Methods: A neural network was designed to correct motion artifacts directly from a Z-spectrum frequency (Ω) domain rather than an image spatial domain. Motion artifacts were simulated by modeling 3D rigid-body motion and readout-related motion during k-space sampling.

Delayed macular development in preterm infants with spontaneously regressed retinopathy of prematurity.

BMC Ophthalmol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Children's Hospital of Fudan University, National Children's Medical Center, Wanyuan Road No.399, Shanghai, 201102, China.

Purpose: To evaluate the macular development in preterm infants with spontaneously regressed retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) utilizing handheld spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) during the early postnatal period.

Design: A cross-sectional observational study.

Methods: Using handheld SD-OCT, OCT images were acquired in non-sedated infants ages about 37 weeks(w) post-menstrual-age (PMA = gestational age in weeks + chronological age).

Speech Enhancement for Cochlear Implant Recipients using Deep Complex Convolution Transformer with Frequency Transformation.

IEEE/ACM Trans Audio Speech Lang Process

February 2024

CRSS: Center for Robust Speech Systems; Cochlear Implant Processing Laboratory (CILab), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Texas at Dallas, USA.

The presence of background noise or competing talkers is one of the main communication challenges for cochlear implant (CI) users in speech understanding in naturalistic spaces. These external factors distort the time-frequency (T-F) content including magnitude spectrum and phase of speech signals. While most existing speech enhancement (SE) solutions focus solely on enhancing the magnitude response, recent research highlights the importance of phase in perceptual speech quality.

Aim: To quantify and compare longitudinal thickness changes of the ganglion cell complex (GCC) and the choroid in patients with different patterns of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression.

Methods: Retrospective cohort analysis of anonymized data from participants aged 50y or more and diagnosed with early/intermediate AMD in at least one eye (with no evidence of advanced AMD). A total of 64 participants were included from the Instituto de Retina de Lisboa (IRL) study (IPL/2022/MetAllAMD_ESTeSL) and divided into 4 groups according to the Rotterdam classification for AMD.
