Radiocardiography and rheography of the pulmonary artery were used to examine impairments in hemodynamics and contractile function of the right ventricle in 40 patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis complicated with persistent hypertension. Right ventricular hemodynamic and contractile impairments were shown to be not equivalent with similar clinical and functional signs of pulmonary hypertension. This fact indicates that the use of special techniques is of practical value in the determination of right ventricular hemodynamics and myocardial contractility in patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis. Radiocardiography and rheography of the pulmonary artery are sufficiently reliable noninvasive techniques for examining the hemodynamics and contractile function of the right ventricular myocardium.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Lithuania evaluated outcomes in 87 elderly patients hospitalized with chronic heart failure (CHF) using various diagnostic methods, including transthoracic impedance cardiography and NT-proBNP levels.
  • Key results showed that high thoracic fluid content, elevated NT-proBNP levels, short walking distance, and specific changes on chest X-ray are all linked to a poor prognosis in these patients.
  • The findings suggest that these parameters can be valuable for assessing the diagnosis and predicting cardiovascular death in CHF patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Bioelectrical impedance techniques are applied in body composition analysis, cardiac monitoring, and food characterization, but temperature changes can affect their accuracy.
  • This study examined how temperature influences the impedance of various biological tissues, including animal samples and fruits, using measurements across a temperature range of 20°C to 50°C.
  • Results showed that impedance consistently decreased with rising temperature, with a relative change of -1.42% per °C on average, and animal tissues exhibited a higher temperature sensitivity compared to fruits and vegetables.

Advances in Pediatric Lung Function Testing Techniques.

Clin Chest Med

September 2024

Department of Pediatrics, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle Children's Research Institute, Seattle Children's Hospital, 4800 Sandpoint Way Northeast, Seattle, WA 98105, USA.

For decades spirometry has been the benchmark test for capturing lung function in children but its recognized limitations required the development of other techniques. This article introduces novel techniques in lung function assessment for pediatric patients, including multiple breath washout, impulse oscillometry, structured light plethysmography, and electrical impedance tomography, and common themes in interpreting the results. Challenges include standardization, reference data, and clinical integration of these innovative tools.

This study aimed to evaluate TFC by EC versus lung ultrasound (LUS) findings for diagnosing and follow-up of TTN in late preterm and term neonates. This prospective observational study was conducted on 80 neonates with gestational age ≥ 34 weeks. TTN group included 40 neonates diagnosed with TTN, and no lung disease (NLD) group included 40 neonates without respiratory distress.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how well various lung function tests could differentiate asthma, asthma-COPD overlap (ACO), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while also identifying functional traits for better classification of obstructive lung diseases.
  • Data from 756 lung function tests were analyzed, revealing that linear discriminant analysis achieved high accuracy in classifying healthy individuals, COPD, and cystic fibrosis (CF), but lower accuracy for asthma and ACO.
  • Key metrics, including airway resistance and breathing control parameters, were found to be significant differentiators between these conditions, highlighting the complexity of obstructive lung diseases and the utility of specific testing parameters.
