Chlorpyrifos ethyl was found to be widely distributed in water and sediment in Lake Naivasha. Higher levels were reported in sediment (11.2-30.0 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw) in wet season than in dry season (4.7-17.4 ng g(-1) dw). The mean concentration of chlorpyrifos ethyl in water in wet season ranged between 8.8 and 26.6 μg L(-1) and decreased to between below detection limit to 14.0 μg L(-1) in dry season. On average, higher concentrations of chlorpyrifos ethyl were observed in sediment than water samples. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in concentration between the seasons, and a significant interaction between seasons and mean concentrations at p ≤ 0.05. However, levels of diazinon and carbofuran were below the detection limit in all the samples analyzed. Notably, levels of chlorpyrifos ethyl were higher than the maximum allowable limits (0.1 μg L(-1)) recommended by European Union for drinking water and general water quality criterion for protection of freshwater water organisms (0.083 μg L(-1)).

Current-use pesticide exposures in remote Inuit communities.

Int J Circumpolar Health

December 2024

Axe santé des populations et pratiques optimales en santé, Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval, Québec, QC, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on pesticide exposure in Inuit populations in Nunavik, Quebec, analyzing biomarker levels from pooled samples of individuals aged 16-80 years as part of the Qanuilirpitaa? 2017 survey.
  • The results found various pesticide metabolites detected, with the highest concentrations of PNP, trans-DCCA, and 3,5,6-TCP, showing mostly similar or lower levels compared to the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS).
  • Although there were trends indicating higher pesticide concentrations in older females, the differences were not statistically significant, highlighting the need for regular monitoring of pesticide exposure amidst increasing global use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the development of a generic physiologically based kinetic (PBK) model for assessing the effects of organophosphate (OP) pesticides on both rats and humans.
  • It utilizes data from existing studies and quantitative structure property relationships to evaluate how well the model predicts the absorption and toxicity of various OP compounds, showing high accuracy in most cases.
  • The findings suggest this PBK model can be a valuable tool for next generation risk assessment (NGRA) of OP pesticides and potentially be adapted for other chemical classes.

White mango scale (WMS) Aulacaspis tubercularis Newstead (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) is a polyphagous armored scale insect which is considered one of the key pests of mango (Mangifera indica L.) around the world. Mango is widely grown in Ethiopia whereas its production is challenged by WMS in the last decade.

In this work, Zn-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate metal-organic framework was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process and used in dispersive micro solid phase extraction of some pesticide from various fruit juice and water samples. Seven widely consumed pesticides in agriculture (chlorpyrifos, haloxyfop--methyl, oxadiazon, diniconazole, clodinafop-propargyl, fenpropathrin, and fenaxoprop--ethyl) were selected as target analytes. In this work, dispersive micro solid phase extraction was followed by a liquid phase microextraction method to achieve more enrichment of the analytes, and the enriched analytes were quantified using a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector.

The Ba River in Vietnam has been facing pollution due to waste generation from agricultural and urban areas. This study focuses on evaluating the spatiotemporal variations in river water quality based on physicochemical characteristics and pesticide parameters for different seasons in 2022-2023. The results indicate that the concentrations of most parameters in the rainy season were higher than those in the early-dry and dry seasons due to the non-point sources in agricultural areas.
