The ventrolateral pallial (VLp) excitatory neurons in the claustro-amygdalar complex and piriform cortex (PIR; which forms part of the palaeocortex) form reciprocal connections with the prefrontal cortex (PFC), integrating cognitive and sensory information that results in adaptive behaviours. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and environmental degradation are existential global public health threats. Linking microplastics (MPs) and AMR is particularly concerning as MPs pollution would have significant ramifications on controlling of AMR; however, the effects of MPs on the spread and genetic mechanisms of AMR bacteria remain unclear. Herein, we performed Simonsen end-point conjugation to investigate the impact of four commonly used MPs on transfer of clinically relevant plasmids.

The presence of twenty-four emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) from a range of chemical classes including antimicrobial agents, biocides, industrial chemicals, plastic precursors, preservatives and UV filters in sediment and shellfish samples collected from fifteen sampling sites across Sri Lanka (a tropical developing country) was investigated. Sixteen EOCs were detected in sediments at concentrations ranging from 0.32 to 370.

A 52-year-old Japanese man with a history of childhood asthma presented at our emergency department with progressive dyspnea. Despite subcutaneous adrenaline injections, salbutamol nebulization, and intravenous methylprednisolone, the carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO) increased to 110 mmHg. The patient was intubated, and mechanical ventilation was initiated because of severe respiratory failure.
