Bilateral lung abscesses in a 9-month-old healthy infant.

BMJ Case Rep

Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Pediatrics, Sarita Vihar, New Delhi, Delhi, 110079, India.

Published: October 2012

Multiple lung abscesses are extremely rare in healthy children. We report a case of polymicrobial bilateral lung abscess in a 9-month-old previously well infant presenting with a short history of fever and respiratory distress. The management options and outcome are discussed.

Functional nanozyme system for synergistic tumor immunotherapy via cuproptosis and ferroptosis activation.

Elevated copper levels induce tumor cuproptosis and ferroptosis, leading to immunogenic cell death and subsequent antitumor immune responses. However, dysregulated copper metabolism in tumor cells maintains homeostatic copper balance, while hypoxic microenvironments hinder therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we present a nanozyme system, termed CussOMEp, comprising a copper-based nanovector (CussNV) that is PEGylated and loaded with omeprazole, a copper transporter inhibitor, to enhance tumor synergistic immunotherapy by promoting cuproptosis and ferroptosis.

Background: Congenital lung malformations (CLMs) refer to structural abnormalities of the lungs that occur during fetal development. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) constitute a group of zinc-dependent enzymes, with certain members of this family playing pivotal roles in the remodeling of the lungs both prenatally and postnatally. This study aimed to explore expression levels of MMP-2, MMP-7, and MMP-9 in CLMs which are recognized as pivotal contributors to their clinical pathology.

Autoimmune Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis: A Rare Diagnosis in Pediatric Age.

J Investig Med High Impact Case Rep

March 2025

Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, Porto, Portugal.

Autoimmune pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (AI-PAP) is a rare condition, especially in children. The clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic forms to respiratory distress requiring ventilation. We describe the case of a 13-year-old adolescent male who presented to the emergency department with acute pleuritic chest pain not associated with systemic complaints.

Background: High body mass index (BMI) is a prevalent risk factor in a growing octogenarian population undergoing curative surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Whilst BMI is paradoxically protective, its correlation with clinical frailty or objective fitness is unclear, due to the discrepancy of the ratio between muscle and adipose tissue. We aim to assess the relationship between sarcopenia and post operative survival and complications.

Background: Data on the prognostic impact of type A aortic dissection involving the common carotid arteries (CCAs) are scarce.

Methods: Data on the status of the CCAs were available in 1106 patients who underwent surgery for acute DeBakey type 1 aortic dissection who were recruited in a retrospective, multicentre European registry, that is, the ERTAAD. Postoperative neurological complications were defined as ischaemic stroke, haemorrhagic stroke and/or global brain ischaemia.
