We report an experimental investigation of the magnitude of length and density fluctuations in DNA that has been stretched in nanofluidic channels. We find that the experimental data can be described using a one-dimensional overdamped oscillator chain with nonzero equilibrium spring length and that a chain of discrete oscillators yields a better description than a continuous chain. We speculate that the scale of these discrete oscillators coincides with the scale at which the finite extensibility of the polymer manifests itself. We discuss how the measurement process influences the apparent measured dynamic properties, and outline requirements for the recovery of true physical quantities.

The spectra of internal friction and temperature dependencies of the frequency of a free-damped oscillation process excited in the specimens of an amorphous-crystalline copolymer of polyoxymethylene with the co-monomer trioxane (POM-C) with a degree of crystallinity ~60% in the temperature range from -150 °C to +170 °C has been studied. It has been established that the spectra of internal friction show five local dissipative processes of varying intensity, manifested in different temperature ranges of the spectrum. An anomalous decrease in the frequency of the oscillatory process was detected in the temperature ranges where the most intense dissipative losses appear on the spectrum of internal friction.

Little is known about how distance between homologous chromosomes are controlled during the cell cycle. Here, we show that the distribution of centromere components display two discrete clusters placed to either side of the centrosome and apical/basal axis from prophase to G interphase. 4-Dimensional live cell imaging analysis of centromere and centrosome tracking reveals that centromeres oscillate largely within one cluster, but do not cross over to the other cluster.
