Gout, calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) deposition disease, and calcium hydroxyapatite deposition disease (HADD) are the three most common crystal-induced arthropathies. Multimodality imaging may help in their diagnosis, and is useful for a precise and comprehensive assessment and grading of the related osteoarticular damage. Plain film radiography, due to its low cost and wide availability, is the first imaging technique to be used in crystal deposition diseases, providing well-known and specific findings for CPPD deposition disease and HADD, while it may undergrade the early osteoarticular lesions in gouty patients. Ultrasonography (US) is a radiation-free approach that accurately depicts crystal deposits in cartilage, peri- and intra-articular soft tissues, but it does not give a panoramic view of the affected joints. Cross-sectional imaging techniques can examine crystal deposits in the spine and axial joints. CT has the potential to distinguish monosodium urate (MSU) crystals from calcium containing crystals, due to their different attenuation values. MRI may demonstrate synovitis, erosions and bone marrow edema in gouty patients and it may differentiate tophi from other soft tissue nodules due to its high contrast resolution and power of tissue characterization.

Introduction: Collagen is essential for maintaining lung structure and function and its remodeling has been associated with respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the cellular mechanisms driving collagen remodeling and the functional implications of this process in the pathophysiology of pulmonary diseases remain poorly understood.

Methods: To address this question, we employed ; mice with specific depletion of Lyve-1 macrophages and assessed the content, types and organization of collagen in lung compartments at steady state and after chronic exposure to cigarette smoke (CS).

Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a prevalent global renal illness and one of the main causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). FGF21 has been shown to ameliorate diabetic nephropathy, and in addition FGF-21-treated mice impeded mitogenicity, whereas it is unclear whether FGF21 can influence DN progression by regulating the cell cycle in diabetic nephropathy.

Methods: In order to create a diabetic model, STZ injections were given to C57BL/6J mice for this investigation.

Mechanobiology of 3D cell confinement and extracellular crowding.

Biophys Rev

Macromolecular Engineering Laboratory, Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, ETH Zurich, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland.

Cells and tissues are often under some level of confinement, imposed by the microenvironment and neighboring cells, meaning that there are limitations to cell size, volume changes, and fluid exchanges. 3D cell culture, increasingly used for both single cells and organoids, inherently impose levels of confinement absent in 2D systems. It is thus key to understand how different levels of confinement influences cell survival, cell function, and cell fate.

Case report: Atypical young case of MV1 Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with unusually long survival.

Front Cell Neurosci

January 2025

Department of Pathology, Case Western Reserve University, School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH, United States.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare, fatal, rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease resulting from an accumulation of misfolded prion proteins (PrP). CJD affects 1-2 new individuals per million each year, and the sporadic type accounts for 90% of those cases. Though the median age at onset and disease duration vary depending on the subtype of sporadic CJD (sCJD), the disease typically affects middle-aged to elderly individuals with a median survival of 4-6 months.

Unlabelled: is the causal agent of stem rot of many crops, a highly destructive disease of groundnut ( L). Based on evidence that many groundnut genotypes have an inherent ability to tolerate the pathogenicity of species, twenty-two genotypes of groundnut were screened against infection in sick plot field experiment; four genotypes, namely CS19, GG16, GG20 and TG37A, were selected as being the most tolerant, moderately tolerant, susceptible and highly susceptible to stem rot, respectively. Stem tissues (1cm from the collar region) from infected and healthy plants of four selected genotypes differing in susceptibility were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
