Cyclo-bis-(urea-3,6-dichlorocarbazole) (1) forms a 1 : 2 complex with CH(3)CO(2)(-) and H(2)PO(4)(-) through hydrogen bonding with the two urea moieties, resulting in fluorescence enhancement via a combined photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and energy transfer mechanism. The binding mechanism involves a conformational change of the two urea receptors to a trans orientation after binding of the first anion, which facilitates the second interaction.

Two new RuII-based bis-heteroleptic ditopic receptors 1[PF6]2 (C44H34F12N10OP2Ru) and 2[PF6]2 (C40H27F17N10OP2Ru), decorated with a 1-naphthyl and pentafluorophenyl urea pendant arm, respectively, along with the previously reported 3[PF6]2 (C40H31F13N10OP2Ru), containing a pendant 4-fluorophenyl urea unit and 4[PF6]2, devoid of a pendant urea arm, have been studied to establish the role of urea proton acidity on the sensing and extraction of oxyanions in the presence of triazole C-H as an additional hydrogen bonding motif. 1H-NMR, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and photophysical experiments show selective binding of 1[PF6]2 and 2[PF6]2 toward oxyanions such as phosphates (e.g.

New --butylthiacalix[4]arenes, which are mono-, 1,2-di- and tetrasubstituted at the lower rim containing -(4'-nitrophenyl)acetamide and ,-diethylacetamide groups in and conformations have been synthesized. Their complexation ability towards a number of tetrabutylammonium salts -BuNX (X = F, Cl, Br, I, CHCO, HPO, NO) was studied by UV spectroscopy. The effective receptor for the anions studied as well as selective receptors for F, CHCO and HPO ions, which based on the synthesized thiacalix[4]arenes, have been obtained.

We have quantum chemically analyzed the bonding mechanism behind the affinity of various heterocalixarenes for anions with a range of geometries and net charges, using modern dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D3BJ). The purpose is to better understand the physical factors that are responsible for the computed affinities and thus to develop principles for a more rational design of anion receptors. Our model systems comprise heterocalixarenes 1-4 as hosts, which are characterized by different bridging heteroatoms (O, N, S) as well as the anionic guests Cl, Br, I, BF, CHCO, HPO, HSO, NCS, NO, PF, and SO.

A new benzobisimidazolium derivative () bearing four naphthalene moieties was synthesized and demonstrated as an F ion-selective fluorescent chemosensor. The fluorescence of in acetonitrile (CHCN) is significantly stronger with F and acetate (CHCO), but not with other anions (Cl, Br, I, HSO, and HPO). The fluorescence of is enhanced selectively with F in the presence of a small amount of water.

Two novel amide-based receptors were synthesized under microwave irradiation. Their chemical structures were confirmed by IR, H NMR, C NMR, and elemental analysis. The binding properties of these amide-based receptors to various anions (HPO, HSO, CHCO, CHCO, ClO, F, Cl, and Br) were examined by UV titration in THF at 20 °C.
