Background: The aim of our study was to investigate the ability of the Seventh edition of the classification by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) to identify patients at higher risk and to predict the overall survival in patients with esophageal carcinoma.

Methods: Demographic and clinical data of 605 patients, who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma between 1992 and 2009, were analyzed. Tumor stage and grade were classified according to the sixth and seventh editions of the UICC classification.

Results: Tumor depth (T), lymph node affection (N), and metastasis (M) status according to the seventh edition of the UICC classification showed significant differences in survival of each single status. Kaplan-Meier analysis of overall survival by the seventh edition of the UICC classification showed poor discrimination between stages Ib and IIa (p=0.098), stages IIIa and IIIb (p=0.672), and stages IIIc and IV (p=0.799). Further, the estimated median survival time between stages IIa and IIb was discordant.

Conclusions: The seventh edition of the UICC TNM classification cannot satisfactorily distinguish among different risk groups of patients with resected esophageal carcinoma. The new subgroups do not unify the different TNM stages with similar survival. We strongly propose that the next revision of the UICC classification should reduce the stages to groups with similar survival, without defining complex subgroups.

Purpose: Neoadjuvant immune checkpoint blockade with nivolumab plus ipilimumab improves overall survival (OS) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, randomized data for resectable lung cancer are limited. We report results from the exploratory concurrently randomized nivolumab plus ipilimumab and chemotherapy arms of the international phase III CheckMate 816 trial.

Methods: Adults with stage IB-IIIA (American Joint Committee on Cancer seventh edition) resectable NSCLC received three cycles of nivolumab once every 2 weeks plus one cycle of ipilimumab or three cycles of chemotherapy (on day 1 or days 1 and 8 of each 3-week cycle) followed by surgery.

In December 2023, the Trauma Professional Committee of the American Society of Surgeons officially released the seventh edition of "Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient (2022 Stan-dards)". Compared to the sixth edition of the standards, the main updated content of the seventh edition includes ten aspects: (1) trauma centers need to meet new personnel configuration and qualification requirements, (2) trauma centers need to develop more structured and effective trauma treatment effectiveness improvement and patient safety plans, (3) trauma centers need to develop data quality plans, (4) trauma centers need to develop new diagnosis and treatment plans for specific patients, (5) trauma centers need to have new professional knowledge, (6) trauma centers need to meet new response time and resource availability standards, (7) trauma centers need to meet new academic and scientific requirements, (8) tertiary trauma centers need corresponding qualification certificates if providing neurological trauma treatment, (9) new requirements for pediatric trauma centers, (10) the fourth level trauma center standards. The research literature published by scholars in the field of trauma in the past decade has provided sufficient evidence-based medicine evidence for updating content.

Background: Impairment in aspects of communication is a core diagnostic feature of schizophrenia and other psychotic spectrum disorders. These communication difficulties inhibit participation in a range of daily activities and affect relationships and quality of life. There has been little research focussed on communication outcomes in relation to cognitive remediation therapy within this population.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effectiveness of a treatment strategy combining neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NECTORS) followed by surgery in preventing distant metastasis (DM) in patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, compared to standard care with concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT).
  • - It includes 342 patients with advanced HPV-positive OPSCC, showing that NECTORS resulted in no cases of distant-only metastasis and fewer overall recurrences than CCRT.
  • - The analysis considers various factors like age, sex, and cancer stage to assess DM-free survival rates, highlighting the potential benefits of NECTORS in reducing treatment-related toxicity.
