Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of saline washout under the diaphragm on postoperative shoulder tip pain (STP) and β-endorphin (βE) levels in patients who had undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC).
Methods: Between December 2010 and March 2011, 50 patients requiring cholecystectomy for benign gallbladder disease were enrolled in this study. Twenty-five patients (Group 1) underwent LC without saline irrigation, whereas the other 25 were operated on with saline irrigation (30 mL/kg) under the diaphragm (Group 2). Plasma levels of βE were measured before and after the operation. The degree of STP following LC was assessed using a visual analog pain scale (VAS) at 6, 12, and 24 hours postoperatively.
Results: Eight patients in Group 1 (32.0%) and seven patients in Group 2 (28.0%) complained of STP. There was no significant difference between the two groups in operation time, postoperative hospital length, postoperative βE, dose of analgesics, or VAS at 6, 12, and 24 hours after surgery. The intensity of abdominal pain (AP) was significantly higher than that of STP. Significantly elevated levels (11.3±5.1 pg/mL) of βE were observed postoperatively when compared with preoperative levels (9.7±5.2 pg/mL) (P=.02).
Conclusions: Normal saline irrigation under the diaphragm does not reduce postoperative STP after LC. Ancillary techniques to reduce AP and STP should be considered.

Objective: To investigate the effects of lycopene supplementation on inflammation, lung histopathology and systemic DNA damage in an experimentally induced lung injury model, ventilated by conventional mechanical ventilation and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, compared with a control group.
Methods: Fifty-five rabbits sampled by convenience were supplemented with 10mg/kg lycopene for 21 days prior to the experiment. Lung injury was induced by tracheal infusion of warm saline.

Introduction: Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) have been proven to aggravate asthma pathogenesis. We previously demonstrated that concurrent exposure to house dust mite (HDM) and DEP in mice increases both eosinophils and neutrophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and also results in higher levels of neutrophil-recruiting chemokines and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation compared to sole HDM, sole DEP or saline exposure. We aimed to evaluate whether treatment with anti-IL-5 can alleviate the asthmatic features in this mixed granulocytic asthma model.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate and compare the rise in the temperature for the safety of the ureter and kidney parenchyma when firing the holmium laser and the thulium fiber laser (TFL).
Methods: We performed a laboratory experiment to measure the rise in temperature upon firing holmium laser and a TFL in a 10 cm3 transparent test tube in an outdoor environment and then in a container with normal saline.
Results: In a 10 cc test tube with static water at 25°C, the rise in temperature with holmium and TFL depends on the firing time, keeping power constant.

Biostimulants stimulate plant growth and tolerance to salinity stress, which creates unfavorable conditions for plant growth from emergence to harvest; however, little is known about their roles in triggering salt tolerance. Therefore, the study aimed to determine how applying a foliar plant-derived biostimulant (Aminolom Enzimatico® 24%) affects the growth (leaf area, biomass weight, root diameter, root fresh weight, and water-soluble dry matter), physiology (chlorophyll content, electrolyte leakage, cell membrane stability, and relative water content), and stomata of the lower and upper parts of leaves in radish plants ( L.) under salinity stress.

Background: () is one of the microorganisms responsible for the pathology of root canals. We aimed in this study to determine the efficacy of two different pastes (calcium hydroxide combined with saline and calcium hydroxide combined with propolis) as a dressing material in eradicating from infected root canals.
Methods: Twenty extracted single-rooted and single-canalled first premolars randomly distributed into two equal groups of 10 teeth each.
