Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors: Antimicrobial Activity Against ESKAPEE Bacteria and Mechanisms of Action.

Antibiotics (Basel)

January 2025

Laboratory of Basic and Applied Bacteriology, Department of Microbiology, Center of Biological Sciences, Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Londrina 86057-970, Brazil.

Multidrug-resistant bacteria cause over 700,000 deaths annually, a figure projected to reach 10 million by 2050. Among these bacteria, the ESKAPEE group is notable for its multiple resistance mechanisms. Given the high costs of developing new antimicrobials and the rapid emergence of resistance, drug repositioning offers a promising alternative.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, underserved populations, such as racial and ethnic minority communities, were disproportionately impacted by illness and death. Ensuring people from diverse backgrounds have the ability to participate in clinical trials is key to advancing health equity. We sought to analyze the spatial variability in locations of COVID-19 trials sites and to test associations with demographic correlates.

Background: Intracerebral hemorrhage represents a critical subtype of stroke, imposing substantial social and economic challenges. Considering the considerable impact of intracerebral hemorrhage in Asia and the absence of studies detailing its epidemiological features, the aim of this study is to elucidate the temporal trends and distribution characteristics of intracerebral hemorrhage in Asia from 1990 to 2021, as well as to forecast the future burden.

Methods: The data derived from Global Disease Burden Study 2021 were used to investigate the age-standardized rates and absolute numbers of incident intracerebral hemorrhage cases and related deaths in Asia across genders, age groups and geographical locations.

Muscle repair and regeneration are complex processes. In Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), these processes are disrupted by the loss of functional dystrophin, a key part of the transmembrane dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex that stabilizes myofibers, indirectly leading to progressive muscle wasting, subsequent loss of ambulation, respiratory and cardiac insufficiency, and premature death. As part of the DMD pathology, histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity is constitutively increased, leading to epigenetic changes and inhibition of muscle regeneration factors, chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and adipogenesis.
