Management of trihalomethanes in water by ZnO@kaolinite composite: integrated experimental and modeling studies.

J Water Health

September 2024

Environmental Science and Industrial Development Department, Faculty of Postgraduate Studies for Advanced Sciences, Beni-Suef University, Beni-Suef 62511, Egypt E-mail:

The adsorption of trihalomethanes (THMs) from drinking water was investigated in the current study through comparison studies of kaolinite and ZnO@kaolinite nanocomposites. The clay structural network's successful immobilization on the zincite hexagonal structure of ZnO nanoparticles' lattice layers was verified by the SEM/EDX analysis. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum removal of THMs was achieved by kaolinite and ZnO@kaolinite nanocomposites after 60 min.

The impact of PAC-loaded polymer membrane thickness on chloroform removal and comparison of solvent and thermal membrane regeneration methods.

Water Environ Res

July 2024

Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has better adsorption performance than granular activated carbon (GAC) and is widely used in water purification. In most cases, PAC is dosed into water directly, then precipitated as sludge, and landfilled. In this study, PAC was mixed with a polymer and dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent to form a PAC-loaded membrane, which was then tested for chloroform removal.

Comprehensive comparison of water quality risk and microbial ecology between new and old cast iron pipe distribution systems.

J Environ Sci (China)

December 2024

Nanzhou Waterworks of Guangzhou Water Supply Co. Ltd., Guangzhou 510000, China.

The effects of cast iron pipe corrosion on water quality risk and microbial ecology in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) were investigated. It was found that trihalomethane (THMs) concentration and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) increased sharply in the old DWDSs. Under the same residual chlorine concentration conditions, the adenosine triphosphate concentration in the effluent of old DWDSs (Eff-old) was significantly higher than that in the effluent of new DWDSs.

Comparison of chlorine and chlorine dioxide disinfection in drinking water: Evaluation of disinfection byproduct formation under equal disinfection efficiency.

Water Res

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of the Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210023, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Disinfection efficiency and the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are crucial for evaluating different disinfection methods, but many studies use the same initial doses and contact times, which can lead to inaccurate comparisons.
  • This research quantitatively compared chlorine (Cl) and chlorine dioxide (ClO) disinfection, establishing a connection between disinfection efficiency and DBP formation using integral CT (ICT) values.
  • The study found that ClO was significantly more effective than Cl in inactivating Pseudomonas aeruginosa while producing notably lower levels of harmful DBPs like trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs).

Improved lipid analysis using a 2D-LC-MS system with a novel injection procedure.

J Chromatogr B Analyt Technol Biomed Life Sci

Research and Development, DMPK, Sanofi-Aventis Deutschland GmbH, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Electronic address:

The aim of this study was to improve analysis of nonpolar lipidomics sample extracts using reversed phase (RP) chromatography. A 4/3/3 (v/v/v) mixture of methanol/methyl tert-butyl ether/chloroform (MeOH/MTBE/CHCl, MMC) was chosen for sample extraction solvent based on its proven extraction capability for several lipid classes. To avoid carry over, loss of analytes and peak distortion the loops and all capillaries of the presented LC system were flushed and filled up with methanol until the analytical column.
