Upper extremity function and disability recovery with vibration therapy after stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs.

J Neuroeng Rehabil

December 2024

National Center for Geriatrics and Welfare Research, National Health Research Institutes, No. 8, Xuefu W. Rd., Huwei Township, Yunlin County, 63247, Taiwan (R.O.C.).

Background: This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of vibration therapy for improving upper extremity motor impairment, function, and disability recovery in people with stroke.

Design: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library Database, Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to May 31, 2024.

Balancing methane emission and alkalinity conservation: Insights from mineral amendments in coastal sediments.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Electronic address:

With global climate warming and ocean acidification, mineral amendments in coastal areas have emerged as a promising strategy to bolster carbon sinks and alkalinity. However, most research has predominantly focused on carbon dioxide (CO) absorption, with limited exploration of methane (CH) reduction despite its more potent greenhouse effect. To address this gap, our study conducted a microcosm manipulative experiment employing coastal wetlands sediments to elucidate the regulatory effects of various mineral amendments on greenhouse gas emissions (including CO and CH) and seawater alkalinity.

Context: Medical students report high levels of perceived stress and burnout, especially during the preclinical years. The combination of physical stressors from poor posture, poor sleep quality, and mental stressors from the rigorous curriculum stimulates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to secrete cortisol. Previous studies have shown that persistent elevated cortisol levels are associated with negative health outcomes.

Laser-based selective killing of a manipulative parasite reveals partial reversibility of phenotypic alterations in its intermediate host.

Curr Res Parasitol Vector Borne Dis

October 2024

Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Carnot de Bourgogne, UMR 6303 CNRS, Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté, 9 Avenue Alain Savary, 21078, Dijon, France.

Various parasites alter their intermediate host's phenotype in ways that increase parasite transmission to definitive hosts. To what extent infected intermediate hosts can recover from such "manipulation" is poorly documented, thus limiting our understanding of its proximate and ultimate causes. Here, we address the reversibility of several phenotypic alterations induced by the acanthocephalan , a trophically-transmitted bird parasite, in its amphipod intermediate host.

The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD) is a tool designed to measure psychopathy through its grandiose-manipulative, callous-unemotional, daring-impulsive, and conduct disorder subscales. The present study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the PSCD's parent and child self-report versions with a sample of 149 justice-involved youths (55% boys) and their parents (71% mothers) in Iran. Results indicated that both versions of the PSCD confirmed the originally proposed hierarchical four-factor structure.
