In this paper we describe the luminescence properties of Si nanowires (NWs) prepared by a maskless synthesis technique, based on the Au-catalyzed wet etching of Si substrates by an aqueous solution of H(2)O(2) and HF. A strong room temperature photoluminescence (PL), centered at about 690 nm, is observed when Si NWs are optically excited. The detailed analysis of the steady-state and time-resolved PL properties of the system as a function of aging, temperature and pump power allows to demonstrate that the emission is due to the radiative recombination of quantum confined excitons. These results open the route towards novel applications of Si NWs in photonics as efficient light sources.

The enzyme D-sorbitol dehydrogenase (SLDH) facilitates the conversion of D-sorbitol to L-sorbose. While current knowledge of this enzyme class predominantly centers on Gluconobacter oxydans, the catalytic properties of enzymes from alternative sources, particularly their substrate specificity and coenzyme dependency, remain ambiguous. In this investigation, we conducted BLASTp analysis and screened out a novel SLDH (Fpsldh) from Faunimonas pinastri A52C2.

Bacteriophages (phages) are being investigated as potential biocontrol agents for the suppression of bacterial diseases in cultivated crops. Jumbo bacteriophages, which possess genomic DNA larger than 200 kbp, generally have a broader host range than other phages and therefore would be useful as biocontrol agents against a wide range of bacterial strains. Thus, the characterization of novel jumbo phages specific for agricultural pathogens would be of importance for the development of phage biocontrol strategies.

Aiming at the construction of novel platforms with excellent performances in both circularly polarized photoluminescence (CP-PL) and electrochemiluminescence (CP-ECL), a new family of pyrenophanes with rigidly locked pyrene dimers and varied bridges has been designed and synthesized. Attributed to densely packed pyrene excimers, the resultant pyrenophanes revealed tunable bridge-dependent emission behaviors, as investigated by femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. More importantly, all these planar chiral pyrenophanes display strong CP-PL with large dissymmetry factor (gPL) values up to 0.

Unlabelled: The effects of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) (400-650 MPa) and holding temperature (25-50 °C) in thermally assisted HHP processing on multi-scale structure of starch (granule, crystalline and molecular), techno-functional properties, and digestibility of sorghum starch (SS) were evaluated. Response surface methodology has verified that the process impact on the modification of SS was dependent primarily on the pressure level. As HHP increased, processed SS progressively lost their granular structure and Maltese cross, indicating gradual structural disorder within the granules.

As a vital process for solar fuel synthesis, water oxidation remains a challenging reaction to perform using durable and cost-effective systems. Despite decades of intense research, our understanding of the detailed processes involved is still limited, particularly under photochemical conditions. Recent research has shown that the overall kinetics of water oxidation by a molecular dyad depends on the coordination between photocharge generation and the subsequent chemical steps.
