Optical cavity for auto-referenced gas detection.

Published: December 2011

An enhanced optical system design for NDIR gas detection is presented. Multiple paths lengths within the same cavity are used to auto reference the system. The system has good thermo-mechanical stability: it requires no special thermal stabilization, shows no sensitivity to thermal emitter drift and has no moving parts involved. Long term stability, virtually no zero-drift and sub-ppm level gas detection were achieved using commercial thermopile sensors and a thermal emitter modulated at low frequency (~0.5 Hz). Experimental tests were performed using carbon monoxide (CO) and a 30.5 cm cavity length. The design can be extended to allow multiple gas detection within the same optical cavity.

Microbial volatile organic compounds measured in the air of a waste sorting plant and a university by thermal desorption-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Institut de Recherche Robert-Sauvé en Santé Et en Sécurité du Travail (IRSST), Montréal, Québec, Canada.

In recyclable waste management facilities, several contaminants, mainly bioaerosols and microorganisms, can be released and cause potential adverse health effects. Given that microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) are metabolites developed by molds and since they can be considered as potential biomarkers of mold exposure, their concentrations in ambient air were monitored at a recyclable waste sorting plant (WSP) and a university campus (UC) serving as control environment for comparison. A recently developed analytical method was used for the detection of 21 selected mVOCs in real conditions.

An analytical method for nine tranquilizer compounds, including eight major natural oil components and 2-phenoxyethanol, was developed using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and validated under CODEX and National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation guidelines. Subsequently, 315 live seafood samples under Korean preference for sashimi (eight species) were monitored with sales distribution channels and place of origin. A total of 76 detection cases in 65 seafood samples contained the target tranquilizer compounds at concentrations ranging from 2.

Detection of trace gases, such as radioactive carbon dioxide, clumped isotopes, and reactive radicals, is of great interest and poses significant challenges in various fields. Achieving both high selectivity and high sensitivity is essential in this context. We present a highly selective molecular spectroscopy method based on comb-locked, mid-infrared, cavity-enhanced, two-photon absorption.

Olfactory Dysfunction in Allergic Rhinitis.

Clin Rev Allergy Immunol

December 2024

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) can have serious consequences as it hinders individuals from detecting important warning signals like smoke, spoiled food, and gas leaks. This can significantly impact their nutritional status, eating satisfaction, and overall quality of life. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common disease that greatly affects the quality of life and can lead to a decrease, distortion, or complete loss of olfactory ability.

Ultrasensitive detection of methylene blue by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with Ag nanoparticle-decorated magnetic CoNi layered double hydroxides.

The unreasonable use of organic dye leads to excessive residues in environmental water, which seriously threatens human health and the natural environment. In this paper, a spherical flower-like magnetic FeO@CoNi layered double hydroxide@silver nanoparticle (FeO@CoNi LDH@Ag NPs) SERS substrate was successfully fabricated electrostatic self-assembly and applied for the sensitive detection of methylene blue (MB) in environmental water. The rapid concentration and separation of the SERS substrate from the water sample could be achieved using an external magnet.
