Interactions between individuals that are guided by simple rules can generate swarming behavior. Swarming behavior has been observed in many groups of organisms, including humans, and recent research has revealed that plants also demonstrate social behavior based on mutual interaction with other individuals. However, this behavior has not previously been analyzed in the context of swarming. Here, we show that roots can be influenced by their neighbors to induce a tendency to align the directions of their growth. In the apparently noisy patterns formed by growing roots, episodic alignments are observed as the roots grow close to each other. These events are incompatible with the statistics of purely random growth. We present experimental results and a theoretical model that describes the growth of maize roots in terms of swarming.

During epidemic outbreaks, human behavior is highly influential on the disease transmission and hence affects the course, duration and outcome of the epidemics. In order to examine the feedback effect between the dynamics of the behavioral response and disease outbreak, a simple SIR- type model is established by introducing the independent variable of effective contact rate, characterizing how human behavior interacts with disease transmission dynamics and allowing for the feedback changing over time along the progress of epidemic and population's perception of risk. By a particle swarm optimization algorithm in the solution procedures and time series of COVID-19 data with different shapes of infection peaks, we show that the proposed model, together with such behavioral change mechanism, is capable of capturing the trend of the selected data and can give rise to oscillatory prevalence of different magnitude over time, revealing how different levels of behavioral response affect the waves of infection as well as the evolution of the disease.

A new method for recognizing geometric parameters of industrial robots.

Intelligent algorithms that are commonly used to obtain errors in the geometric parameters of industrial robots have a low accuracy, easily fall into the local optimal solution, and involve complicated coding such that they are unsuitable for use in engineering. In this study, we first apply the D-H method to establish a model of error in industrial robots, and then use the set of errors in their geometric parameters as the objective function. Following this, we improve the accuracy of global optimization of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm by drawing on the wandering behavior of the wolf pack algorithm and hybridization behavior of the genetic algorithm.

Activity and autonomous motion are fundamental aspects of many living and engineering systems. Here, the scale of biological agents covers a wide range, from nanomotors, cytoskeleton, and cells, to insects, fish, birds, and people. Inspired by biological active systems, various types of autonomous synthetic nano- and micromachines have been designed, which provide the basis for multifunctional, highly responsive, intelligent active materials.

This research utilizes time series models to forecast electricity generation from renewable energy sources and electricity consumption. The configuration of optimal parameters for these models typically requires optimization algorithms, but conventional algorithms may struggle with fixed search patterns and limited robustness. To address this, we propose an auto-evolution hyper-heuristic algorithm named AE-GAPB.
